POST OP...Surgery was 01/15/08. Lapbander!!!!

I too, have thyroid problems. Hypothyroid!!! And my levels are jumping all over the place, before and now after the surgery, i have been on 4 different strengths of meds...Just had blood work on 02/18/08 and my levels are almost nothing. on Jan 16, 2008, levels of TSH was 49.82, meds were in creased, and on Feb 18, 2008 TSH levels were .04...Go figure, so meds were decreased....Seems like a cat and mouse game. as anyone else had this problem, and if so, does it correct itself? I know that I would always gain weight when my levels were low, before the surgery, so I am sure this will hinder my weight loss too. I go for my first fill on 02/26/08..so I look forward to talking to my surgeon. Any one out there have any suggestions

I have dealt with thyroid issues for years, the band surgery caused some fluctuation with my levels, but weight loss, combined with increased activity----we adjusted.

Then about 4-5 months ago, I got sick with a cold, sore throat etc. When I was feeling my glands, my thyroid was huge! When the cold went away and the thyroid was still huge, I went to the Dr. Sure enough it had a massive tumor growing on it.

While they did the routine tests to monitor it -- it kept growing. It got to the point that laying on my back, it weighed so heavily it blocked off my air! I was having issues swallowing.

The needle biopsy showed cancerous cells forming.

So off to surgery we went. There was a pathologist in the OR. There was one massive tumor orange to grapefruit size---growing from the isthmus (the center---your thyroid looks kind of like a bow tie---so the knot is the isthmus) and the entire right lobe were attached to the tumor, so they come out. Pathology in the OR found it to not be cancerous yet---it eventually might have developed into cancer, but the rate it was growing would have choked me to death first!!! Great thought huh???

They left the left lobe, so my body would produce some natural hormones, and it was not affected by the tumor. Of course it will be closely watched.

I have had 2 sets of blood work since, and am still working to adjust the meds---but I feel sooooo much better!

It is a pain to level out---and your number will vary from day to day. Just keep a watch on it, if it gets too low, it does affect your metabolism, and your ability to lose weight.

Welcome to bandland and to LBT!!!

Kat817,

WOW, you have really been thru ther ringer, by the sounds of it!!! I sure hope the best for you. I am sure that was a hugh scare for you, and your family. I have had thyroid issues since '92, but the meds they had me on, normally kept my levels where they should be...but since I started the dieting, and after I had lost some weight, it seems like my levels take dives.....up and down....I guess it is just frustrating...

But thanks for the info. and I will keep you in my prayers, hoping you will stay healthy...

I know that is what I want.....Good Health

Again ,

Thanks

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
