If you read the post on this site you will be better prepared to ask the right questions. My advice would be ask lots of questions and do research on your doctor. Some questions might be...where will you place my port? What kind of band will you be using and what size? Do you charge for fills and how much? These are all questions I thought I knew the answers to but I was wrong. Good Luck!!

My best advice is, when choosing a doctor, make sure he is the kind who educates his patients and tells them exactly what they are supposed to do to get maximum benefit from the LB. You see people on this forum all the time who don't know what they are supposed to be eating at different phases and don't understand the mechanics of the band and I feel really sorry for them. The band has quite a learning curve. You can't just get it put in, sit back, and wait for it to work. Look for a doctor whose practice is a 'center of excellence' which is awarded to bariatric practices which follow strict guidelines to do a really good job.

Read all that you can any question you have is on here! This is the first and best site I have found for LB. I went for my seminar in 8/06 and had my LB 10/06 so it was very fast, but I was pretty prepared bcuz I was here everyday reading and reading and asking silly questions.

Good Luck !

Hello LJTexas,

Welcome! I just went to a seminar, and it was great. I've been reading a lot of the posts on this site, and they will give you lots of info. The reading will help you come up with your own questions to ask the folks at the seminar. The hospital's charge nurse, the surgeon, the dietician, and post-op patients spoke at the seminar that I attended. A support group meeting followed the seminar, and I really enjoyed sharing info with the bandsters who came. I don't know if you are in Texas or not, but the seminar I attended was in Sugar Land, near Houston. I hope to have surgery in April in Sugar Land with dr. Ponce de leon. Best wishes!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
