Ready and set for March 3

Recommended Posts

Just a little over a week to go before getting banded. I was in the drug store earlier today picking up a few things and passed by the racks of diet coke and aisles of Snacks and other things i will no longer be able to eat. A bittersweet moment, but I'm ready to say goodbye to all that and hello to a new me.

Completed all my pre-op testing this morning and the whole thing is beginning to feel more real. I've been thinking about getting banded for a few months now, but only started doctor/hospital shopping in late January. I'm lucky to have Oxford and getting approved was a breeze; it helped to have a bmi of 44. (That's the only time my bmi actually game in handy!)

Based on other posters comments, I've already picked up Gas-X strips and Colace (to take care of post-op constipation). Has anyone else stocked their medicine cabinets with additional aids?

Surgery Date: 3/3/08

Congrats on the lap band, my date is April 16th and I am so excited. Please let me know how things went for you. I haven't heard about picking up any meds other than Vitamins, (children's cheawables). Good Luck March 3.

Hello... I am going to be banded on March 12th and I have been meaning to stock up on the gas-x. My surgeon's office told me to also buy sugar-free Citracel for regularity. They also said it makes you feel full (fiber).

Interesting thing: I'm currently on the liquid diet phase... it's not been easy...but getting easier. My cravings have changed from pizza, cheeseburgers, french fries to foods such as chicken breast, tuna, baked fish, baked potatos, green Beans and corn. I have no idea what this all means except to say at first I was grieving the high calorie foods that made me fat... but then I started thinking how delicious normal, healthier food sounded.

I'm also pretty lucky, although I have researched the band for years, I just made the decision to have it in mid-January and I'm scheduled for surgery in mid-March. That went very quickly. I'm thankful for that and so very excited about getting the band.

Cheers and best wishes to us!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
