I'm not creative, and really tired of oatmeal

Recommended Posts

Happy Friday, everyone!

I am not creative when it comes to food...my Dr. told me I could start eating oatmeal, and pureed meats, etc...so I guess that's mushy foods...anyways...does anyone have any good ideas or suggestions for this stage? I have been eating oatmeal for Breakfast, a baked potato (mashed up) for lunch and pureed pinto Beans for dinner...I need/want some variety, but don't have a clue what to eat...Can anyone help?

Thanks everyone!:tt2:

You know what's pretty yummy? Refried Beans with some fat free sour cream and a little bit of shredded cheese. (a little as a lot can get stuck) It's like a special treat during the mushy phase. I like cream of wheat better than oatmeal. Oatmeal always gets stuck on me for some reason.

guacamole. applesauce. Refried black Beans with fat free sour cream. Egg drop Soup. Fish (tilapia) poached in seasoned chicken broth with summer squash. (YUM) whipped sweet potatoes. Baked butternut squash. mashed banana. Cauliflower cooked in broth and mashed. yogurt. creamed spinach. cheese souffle. egg custard. cream of wheat. red beans and rice mashed. smooth Peanut Butter. These were my favorites during "mushies". May not be your preferences, but they're suggestions.

Grits were a staple for me. Chili from Wendy's-puree. Refried Beans from Taco Bell.

Yogurt, canned cream soups- either puree or strain.

One of my favorite mushies is baked ricotta. In a small (2 c) Pyrex dish, mix 1/2c ricotta with a tbsp of eggbeaters and 1/2 oz parmesan cheese. Top it with 1/4 c Tomato sauce and 1/2 oz mozzarella. Bake at 350 until lightly browned. Like lasagna without the noodles - yum!

I second the refried Beans, I had a scoop with sour cream, grated tasty cheese, salsa and chopped avocado, yummy. Lentil dahl with a good dollop of thick natural yogurt and lemon juice squeezed all over. Mashed broccoli, carrot, pumpkin and potato with a bit of cheese mashed in and some gravy poured over.

Ordinary chunky Soups like beef and vegetable, irish stew etc just blended a bit more.

A salad of skinned cucumber, chopped skinned Tomato, chopped avocado a can of flavoured tuna and a small can of chickpeas (will make more than one meal probably) - this is pretty mushy when you chew it, but maybe more towards the end of mushies.

pureed berries stirred into greek yogurt. A thick fruit smoothie for Breakfast - some bran, milk, yogurt and a banana and some berries.

Mmmm, I loved mushies!

Here's what I did for my mushie stage:

Took some Oscar Mayer chicken strips or whatever they are called. Used to be Louis Rich. Diced them up into small pieces. Put them in the blender with some chicken broth and blended into pureed mush. Then, added fat free refried Beans, a little bit of fat free sour cream and a little bit of salsa. Tasted just like the inner part of an enchilada.

Never thought eating mushies would taste like a gourmet meal. But, after 10 day pre-op and 2 wk post op liquid diet, almost anything does.:)

I also loved the fat free refried Beans...After my mushy phase, I at them with salsa and a sunny side up egg...DELICIOUS...and lots of yummy protein!

Good luck and congrats on your surgery!

Never thought of that as an idea. I'll have try that one out. Sounds very good and healthy.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
