Struggling with OptiFast!

Recommended Posts

I got on a pair of scales today and I've lost 7kg in 12 days on Optifast so it's working. 3 opti meals a day - been eating heaps of the chocolate bars cause I can chew them and tend to fill me better and minimum 4L Water a day.

that's great:hurray:

when is your op?

Hopefully on the 18th. I'm starting to freak out that the funds won't be through in time and I'll have to reschedule. I've organised everything for over easter as work will be closed for a week so I'll only need to take minimal extra time off.

Keep everything crossed for me that the money comes through in time.

7KG in 12 days is sensational!!! I was hoping for about 5kgs in the 13 days I will do Optifast before surgery but now I'm thinking it will be more like 2 or 3kg. Better than nothing though!

Are you thinking of Macleods?

It could be, I've heard of the americans go on about it saying that it's better than all the rest, if only it was available here

Can someone tell me would I be risking ketosis if I added a little bit of fish to my vegies at night?

I highly doubt it, fish is a high source of Omega 3 and even though it does have a portion of fat it's good fat unlike whether you eat a burger from macdonalds, just make sure that its filletted properly and if it is the flakes are small enough to eat with your vegies

Do you mean risking going into ketosis or risking going out? Ketosis is brought on by cutting out carbs. You can have as much Protein and fats as you like, you won't go out of ketosis.

If you mean risking going in, mild ketosis, like being on Terry Ferguson diet programme, isn't harmful provided you don't stay there for ever. Its quite "natural" for our system to go into ketosis once in a while. Many people think its actually a key to losing weight and keeping it off. Our nomadic ancestors used to have feast and famine times. The famine was essentially what going into ketosis would be like today.

My Dr (who made me do Optimuck for 4 weeks) told me that if I really, really had to cheat then to have either an extra cup of the vege's OR a small piece of grilled fish or skin free lean chicken. As the others said, Ketosis happens with a very low carb diet, so as long as you don't have any carbs, fat or sugars you should be ok. If you can last on the Opti do, but in an emergency grilled fish, or salad will do (you are allowed a spoon of olive oil so you could add some herbs and make a salad dressing.)

Thanks, I really need to have something today, I have felt light headed and queasy all day and thats not an ideal situation to be working children. I have followed the program rigidly for a week so if Im going to cheat at least its not junk, just a small piece of grilled fish.

Danna,

I work with children as well, so I know what you're going through. I'm a cook now, but when I did Optifast a few years ago I was an assistant in a kindy room. After 5 weeks I ended up getting seriously ill because my system was so depleted.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
