Shadow08 1 Posted February 21, 2008 Will someone explain this to me and why it is done?
kity 2 Posted February 21, 2008 Hey Shadow, I'd imagine that if you ask 5 different people, you'd get 5 different answers...but I'll give it a go. Pre-op diets are done for a variety of reasons...and not every doctor requires it. Primarily, it is vital to lose a bit of weight before surgery, shrink your stomach, and give the doctor the room needed to perform the surgery. Secondly, preop diets help shrink your liver, which helps with the surgery. Also, doctors require preop diets to ensure the patient is ready to really modify their eating habits. Mine, for example, was a liquid preop diet for 10 days. If I failed at that, I would probably not been a good candidate for weight loss surgery. Good luck to you!
