April 2005 Bandsters

Recommended Posts

Hi, I just got my surgery scheduled for April 5 with Dr McKeen in Orem Utah.

I am really excited, had planed to go to Mexico but just couldn't go that far knowing I didn't have anything set up here for after care.

I will be self pay and will be soooooo broke. But I feel it is worth it.

I weight 210 and am 5'5", am having lots of self esteem problems. I would love to hear from any of you who will be close to my weight and having surgery anywhere close to my date.

Now I need to read everthing on these boards to find out what to have on hand when I get home.

Hi, I'm a first timer, and I will be getting my band on April 5 by Dr. Ortiz. Can anyone tell me how there experience was with Dr. Ortiz, his staff, the hospital, hotel, just about everything. I'm kind of nervous but excited to. I so badly want this to work, but it kind of scares me when I hear about the problems you have with pbing and figuring out what you should eat. Please help with any info you can. Thank you so much.

Post #20 on page 2, you are officially listed! Congrats! I saw you post on some other threads, so I know you are doing some good digging around in here...research to the bitter end!!!! You will do great. If you run across someone with Ortiz in their signature, PM them and get some feedback that way. Good luck, next week is coming fast for both of us!!!!!!!!

I will receive my band date this Friday (April 1st)... but since I am self pay it should be in two weeks.. So I'm thinking around mid-April or so... I'm really excited... but at the same time, the timing kinda sucks since my bday is April 25th (and I'll still be fasting)... but... it's worth it!

is anyone starting to have doubts?

maybe its the fact that its SOO close but now im starting to get a little freaked out and yes I worry if I will be able to make the changes that is needed.. and if I fail what happens then. ive heard so many things about it not being successful for some people.

WHAT HAPPENS IF IM ONE OF THEM? hehehe

seriously though.. is it nerves or should i reconsider this whole thing? ahhhhhhhhh oh not to mention my hubby doesnt seem to think this is major or he is just trying to be supportive but last night im like.. dude i can die from surgery.. yes chances are i wont but all of a sudden it IS in the back of my head saying what are you doing and i just watched Dr. 90210 when they did a Tummy Tuck, breast lift and arm fixerupper and im thinking god im gonna need to do all of that too.

maybe im more scared not to be the "fat" one anymore???????????

come on peoples i know im not the *only* one feeling all this!!!

I worry too, but I feel I have tryed alot of things that don't work and this sounds like something I can do. My biggest thing is Diet Coke, I was drinking 8 a day and I am now down to one. I need to find something to replace it and I desided to get with the Water thing. I have never liked to drink it but I am going to drink alot starting today. I am trying to stay busy but thinking alot. Think positive!

This is natural, you are only normal to have all kinds of feelings. You will be successful if you follow the banster rules! You will be nervous, excited, and scared, and all those are absolutely normal! :)

No, you are not the only one feeling all this. My biggest fear about going is not coming home. First Blossom, which was very upsetting and made me think about my life and how precious it is to me, then Lori had trouble, then Princess reacted to the Ativan, close calls for both, and all this talk about poor Terry Schiavo, and more talk at home about death and final wishes and all the conversation THAT has spurred, all of that makes me really nervous. THIS IS SURGERY! And for me, IN MEXICO!!! Am I crazy?! Let me just say this right now, if I don't make it back, it WASN"T worth it. I would rather be fat and a mother to my children. There, that's the truth.

However, I have never been one to bust the statistics...I'm so average it's pitiful. My whole Life and Being is average (in a good way, most days!) My hair is brown, eyes, hazel/blue, I'm 5'5", not short or tall, I have a boy and a girl (50/50) I'm 39 years old, about halfway, I don't live in the city or the country (okay, closer to the country) in a neighborhood. Wer'e not rich, not poor, I have a nice house with NO decorations, a brother and a sister, parents divorced (these days, that's average) I go to church, not a big one, not a small one, my husband is cute but not a GQ model, I'm cute but not gorgeous, Now my children are definately above average beautiful........okay, that's me.

At any rate, my point is, I am banking on being an average bandster, too. Have surgery, do fine, lose weight, maybe some problems but nothing big...I hope I'm average.

Now here's something for you to look at, You said, "maybe I'm scared not to be the fat one anymore". Your identity includes your weight, which is also why it's such a problem for you , me, most of us who bother to do something about it. For us, at some point, it's not okay to be the fat one. I just want to be average again. Is 140 too much to ask? Nah.

It's funny, when you start drinking Water you actually start craving it. I drink water all the time and I never used to drink it either! I don't even miss the diet coke anymore, and I enjoy tea and crystal light now along with the water.

Hi All,

Iam being banded on 27th April,Perth Western Australia by I might say by a lovely Dr Watson. This Has been some what all consuming not unlike being told you are expecting.I decided over 12months ago this is what I wanted but have had to wait for insurances to mature. So for me this is almost as exciting as when I went in for C sections and life changing as well. However hopefully it will change my shape for the better....4 kids later. a little sagger and so on I won't go into too much detail. I look forward to a healthier me ...arm pits, non rubbing inner thighs, cooler summers, one chin, ankles, wedding rings back on my finger and one day maybe a tummy ring?????

Looking forward and cheers to you all.

Annette

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
