Daily meds during post-op liquid diet phase

Recommended Posts

:unsure:I take 3 meds daily for high blood pressure. Worried about how this will work during the post-op liquid diet phase. Please share your experiences. Thanks. (Still going through my 6 month nutrition plan).

I had similar concerns before my surgery 2/15 and I took my pills to my pre-op appointment with my surgeon and he told me I could take all of them one at a time right after surgery! They are really small and he said not to worry that I could tollerate them. I was shocked. I was really concerned about a capsule I had to take and the literature for that med specifically said not to open it up and put it into liquid. I have had no trouble taking them since surgery by following his advice. None of mine is a horse pill however!

My doctor said I could take anything the size of an aspirin or smaller. The only thing that I was afraid of was my prilosec capsule. I opened it and poured it into a spoonful of Protein Drink the first two days but today I just swallowed the capsule. I also swallowed two tylenol quick release capsules and so far have had not problem. (It's been about three hours) The capsules are much easier to swallow than the nasty liquid. Just take it slow and allow a little time between pills.< /p>

The prilosec is an average sized capsule, about half an inch long, about the same size as the tylenol quick release, My lexapro is about the size of a bayer aspirin and the Water pill is smaller than both of those. They have had no problem going down. My Vitamins are chewable.< /p>

I have 6 meds I take per day and I had no problem swallowing them whole the day after surgery. At first I was cutting the pain pills and one of my bigger meds in half, but now I just swallow everything whole. Even the big Vicodin pill goes down fine.

However, I did not have any swelling or problems getting liquids down, so that probably makes a difference!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
