Anyone ride horses? How long until you rode?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone ride horses? If so how long until you were back in the saddle?

I am an experienced rider who has ridden all my life, and I have a great horse - but she is not always the most reliable. She will occasionally spook, but it doesn't bother me. How bad would it be to fall off?

I am almost 2 weeks post op right now and feel completely healed.

TIA!

Tater

As an avid rider (daily and foxhunting religiously) riding was tremendously important to me. That my horse could no longer jump because I was so heavy made me do the surgery. However my surgeon was very clear that there was to be NO RIDING of any sort for six weeks. He had a list of reasons . . .so I did what he said. It was tough. But three years post surgery and 82 pounds lost ten pounds past my goal (twenty past the doctor's goal for me) I'm glad I did it. Needless to say, my horse is too, and he's jumping everything these days! Well worth the six weeks off.

I ride horses too, but I waited six weeks (but it felt like forever) before returning to horseback riding. I too felt completely healed, but I wanted to make sure I couldn't rip anything or move the band in any way. I know that kind of healing takes a bit longer. And I say I waited six weeks, but thinking about it, I think I smudged a bit and only waited five :-).

Hope that helps!

It was very hard not to get on my Big Guy - But my Dr. had me wait 10wks.

I was a slow healer & had port pain well into Wk 6 that he suggested a few more wks....but your Doc will know whats best for ya.

Go riding just about every day - no issues other than I'm lighter and it's a LOT easier to get on/off!!!

He said whenever I feel up to it, but I don't think he has any idea what riding really entails.

My trainer is in Florida for another month, so I guess I'll wait until she comes back - that should make it 6 weeks.

I don't have any pain anymore, so it's tempting. Good thing it's February and I hate riding now.

I already know my horse is going to love the new smaller me.

Hi,

I have shown horses/mules for over 20 years. I had the band done in May of 07. I was ridding in shows by July. Really be careful of getting dizzy. I seem to get light headed dismounting sometimes. I never had that problem before. Start out slow after 6 weeks. Remember your balance may be off when you start loosing big amounts of weight. If you ride western, just remember to keep your heals down.

I am so glad I read this post. The question came across my mind... If I get the band will I ever be able to ride again? Is there any limitation to riding though after you get the band? or can you ride (possibly better) before you had the band.

I only ride for fun (not for shows or anything). We live in the woods and do a lot of trail riding around our property. I have noticed that mounting is a LOT easier. And, if I fall, I won't make such a big dent in the earth! Just kidding, but I AM less worried about falling while jumping over a creek or something. I feel more in control of my body.

Hope that helps!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
