Thank you for welcoming me to this board. I received a phone call from Medobolix today and they had to change my appointment until the 14th of July instead of the 7th. Another week to wait. OH WELL. Glad you enjoyed the festival. We didn't make it there. Have you been banded and are you from the Parkersburg area? Again thanks for the welcome.

Well, everything worked out with my doctor and I don't have to change. I had my psych appointment and then had to have a sleept study. And now, I have to have another sleep study only this time with a c-pap (spelling?). I never knew I had sleep apnea. Well, at least the ball is rolling and I may not have to complete the six month diet deal for BCBS. Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi LVICENT,

Welcome!

I haven't actually seen the Dr. Still in the beginning stages. However, I did chose Dr Glembot. Hopefully things will start moving a little quicker now!

Hi from Princeton, WV. I had my surgery March 27,2008 at PCH hospital. I was their first and do not regret it at all. I have lost 35 lbs., but feel like I could have done a lot better. I have had no fills, as my Doc says as long as I lose around 6lbs per month....no fills. Its not as easy and quick as I thought and I still have to drum up my own willpower to do most of it. But, if I were not losing this little bit a month, I'd be gaining it per month. Good luck!!! I love southern WV with all of its lovely trails and parks to walk in. jlg1019

Well things are progressing rather quickly now. I have a nutritionist consult on Wednesday and a final sleep study with C-pap on Friday evening. Not sure how many nutrition consults I will have to have but my hope is the have surgery before the end of August or first part of September if all goes well.

Hi Angie. Dr. Kaplan did my surgery this past Monday (the 30th). So far, so good. How much weight have you lost? If you were his first, you were done Mid-March, right?

Kyla, great to see you posting again! Hope you're feeling good.

Well hubby and I had our group consultation Saturday and we're so anxious! Dr. Kaplan did it himself the Jeanie answered some questions at the end (I love Jeanie! she was super-sweet and our kids go to school together). I loved that they had bigger than normal chairs. It showed that he actually understands...he was great! FINALLY a doctor understands that losing weight by yourself is next to impossible and even if you manage to lose it, keeping it off is even harder! He went over all the pros and cons of Lap-band vs. Gastric Bypass. So our paperwork is all done and will be turned in in the morning. We have an appointment with our regular doc tomorrow afternoon and will get the paperwork from her. We've decided we'll let insurance decide who goes first. My BMI is 50 but I'm healty; hubby's BMI is 40 and he has several co-morbidities. So we'll see.

We have to do three months of supervised diet with him. He doesn't care if we lose weight, he's trying to guage how committed to working with his office we'll be. I was a little disappointed to hear this, I just did 5 months with my doctor. But I really don't mind...whatever I need to do.

Froggi, how are you doing?

Hey Jennifer! I'm glad to hear that everything went well! I'm glad Dr. Kaplan was at your seminar. I didn't meet him until about a month before surgery. Isn't he great? I have nothing but good things to say about both him and his staff. I'm on Day 6 now and I start my full liquids tomorrow. I can't wait! I've never look so forward to Cream of Mushroom Soup before! I really don't have much of an appetite, though. I just drink something when my stomach starts grumbling because I know it's time. Don't worry too much about the 3 month thing. My insurance didn't require a supervised diet and they let me get my 6 nutritionist visits in sooner than the 3 month mark. Good luck to you and let me know if you have any questions! =)

Kyla, how soon after you turned in your paperwork did you get called? Do you remember if they check with insurance before they set up your first appointment?

I turned my paperwork in the Monday after my seminar in person and they set up my appointment at that time. I've found you have to call them to get what you want because it takes them a lot longer to call you on their own! They did not check with insurance before my appointment, at least I don't think so. I did alot of research on my insurance on my own through my insurer's website. I came to my appointment with a packet of info I printed off from my insurance website. Maybe they do things different now though? This was back at the start of the year when they were still pretty new at it.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
