Protein problems

Recommended Posts

I was banded on 2/6/08 and was suppose to be able to eat some Protein. It seems like everytime I try and eat Proteins, I get stuck and end up PBing. I am PBing everyday and it is very frustrating. I am not a big fan of the Protein Shakes and have tried them in different smoothies. I am going to try some of the suggestions, like drinking hot tea before meals and not eatting solids until later in the day. But I am so frustrated and doubting my decision.

Chipper,

sorry that you are having these problems. what are you trying to eat? I was banded on 2/5 and I'm still on the full liquid stage, but others have moved to the mushy stage already. maybe you are not chewing it well enough? or it is too dry. I know that if it is dry it will get stuck, my friend pretty much told me to drown everything in ff sauce until i get used to eating again. so tuna will be wet with ff mayo, chicken w/ ff BBQ Sauce, see what i mean. if you are PBing everything you eat, that is not right, you shouldn't be, you need to call your Dr and get that checked.

I wish you well and better eating.

Patti

I have tried ground beef that has been run through the grinder with lots of ketchup on it, chicken which was cooked in the crockpot and moist, egg salad with ff mayo on it. I am trying to chew a million times but I am not sure whats going wrong. I have talked with the physcians assistant and I go back to doctor in 4 days so I am trying to hold off.

Your band might just be tighter than other people's band. Following surgery there can be swelling and this is one of the reasons that Dr's recommend liquids after surgery for several weeks.

You can get Protein in broths and a quick dose of Protein by drinking an Isopure CLEAR drink, 160 calories 40 gms protein. Even if you hate the taste surely you can get one bottle a day in and then supplement your diet with other fluids you like.

Your band will lossen as you lose weight and/or post op swelling goes down.

How solid is the protein you're trying to eat? Cottage cheese is a soft protein, some mashed up Beans etc.

After 12 days, most Dr. would not advise solids protein.

It's too early to doubt your decision, you're still healing. Hang in there!

I have also heard stories of saline getting left in the band when they test it during production. There is also the possibility of obstruction like Peabody had. (She is doing fine now but look for her posts, the situation sounds somewhat familiar). It could also just be that you are still swollen. There are several possibilities. I am sorry you are having so much trouble right now. Try to hang in there until you can get in to see the doctor. Don't second guess your decision just yet. It's still quite early and there are sometimes minor setbacks like this (although I'm sure it doesn't seem so minor right now). You will get it taken care of and be back on the right track soon!

Big Hug!!!

You might also have irritated your esophagus if you've been vomiting, and that would make you even get sick more often. Try going back to liquids until your appointment. I was banded the day after you and haven't had any PBing yet, and I've been eating most of the Protein mushies you mentioned. Can you keep down Soup? There are lots of cream Soups with high Protein counts also.

Hang in there! We're all here feeling for you and hoping things get better for you soon!

Sorry you are having these problems. Hang in there and be gentle on yourself. If solids don't go down, try the softer stuff until you see you doctor again. Liquids go down and stay there don't they? Your system may just not be quite ready to tolerate the solid foods yet. you are still only a couple of weeks out. New skill sets are hard to learn, just be patient with yourself and give yourself time to heal.

A month from now hopefully this will just be a dull memory.

Thank you for all the advice, it is encouraging. My family is stressing me out because they think I am not getting enough to eat.

Don't let them stress you out. They probably don't understand this way of eating. Follow your doctor's advice exactly and you will be fine. Make sure you are staying hydrated.

This time is to take care of you!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
