Hi every Doctor is different mine says 7 days ahead just 3 Protein Shakes a day. Or two weeks ahead 2 Protein shakes and a lean cusine.

By losing weight this helps to shrink your liver for surgery some doctors won't do if you haven't lost wt.

Good luck Call your dr. if you have question.

I get really frustrated when I read on this site that people aren't given specific instructions on what to eat post-op! I feel so bad for those of you who are flying blind. I got so much information that I went in for surgery knowing exactly what I could eat on which day. It is really hard to tell other people what to eat because doctors vary so much in what their post op rules are. But if a doctor didn't give you instructions, I suppose you can follow the ones my doctor gave me! I had to be on Clear Liquids from day 1 (surgery day is day 1) til day 4. This is very important because you must allow the band to heal - it was just sewn onto your stomach muscle and needs to stay there. On day 4 I was allowed to eat soft Proteins. This meant chicken, turkey, fish, cottage cheese, refried Beans, low fat/low sugar yogurt, and eggs. I stayed on soft proteins until my first fill. My doctor does not approve of Protein Shakes, some doctors insist on them. I was able to get plenty of proteins in because all I was eating was Protein. Once I had my first fill and did clear liquids in case of swelling I could eat everything. I was taught 3 bites of protein, 1 bite of vegetable, then fruit at the end if I still had room. I would also call your doctor and ask for more specific instructions.

Robyn, my instructions were to follow a high protein/low carb diet, consuming no more than 30 gms of carbs a day excluding green leafy vegetables. I didn't have to count them. I have to say that gaining weight probably isn't good. From this point on I would suggest getting on some sort of weight loss plan and sticking to it. It is extremely important that your liver be shrunk before surgery to help prevent complications. If you need help with what kind of foods constitute as low carb go out and buy a paperback copy of the Atkins Diet. Also read labels! Do not go by net carbs, go by total carbs. All bread, rice, Pasta, and potatoes are out for now. You will feel like crap for a few days while you are going through carb withdrawal, but it's better to go through it now than after surgery. Once you go through carb withdrawal you will feel like a different person! You will also feel MUCH less hungry. During this time, your body will burn all the sugar that is being stored in the liver and it will shrink.

If you aren't sure about which food plan to follow then call your doctor and demand clarification. You are paying a lot of money for this, you want to make sure you have it right.

I cannot emphasize enough how important it is for you to lose the weight. I know most people think that their lap band journey starts when they have the surgery but it really begins well before that. Time to buckle down and get serious about this girlfriend!!!!

Good luck!!!!!

Robyn, my pre op diet was simple. For 7 days prior I was on:

7am coffee made with milk

9am 200mls of milk

12pm Yoghurt less than 60cals

3pm Another Yoghurt

5pm Beef stock drink

7pm Milky coffee

In-fill with Water or low sugar squash or milk up to 2 and a half pints maximum per day.

It wasnt easy and I lost 12lbs. but it was only for a week. I was done a week ago and all went well. Good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
