Crushing pills question

Recommended Posts

I'm only 3 days post op and have to crush my pills (pain meds and my allergy meds)... my question is, will I have to do this forever or is this just post op? And if I do, anyone have any suggestions on getting them down easy? Eww, my allergy meds are gross!

I take some really HUGE pills with no problems. In fact, I take a lot of supplements for my workouts, and I can take 5 or 6 at one swallow with no splitting or crushing. Take it easy until you get the feel for your band, as everyone is different. After a week or so, try taking one of your smaller ones to test for tolerance. Then move up from there as you need to. Your band will let you know! I never had to crush my pills, but I did have to split them in the first week after surgery. Crushing them has GOT to be nasty tasting! EW! LOL It will get better, trust me...and before you know it. Good luck!

I haven't had problems that required crushing. I do try to get liquid if I can. But I take Thyroid and Arthritus pills daily.

Have a good night - I wish you get over this soon!

THANX! You will get where you want to be before you know it, too! Don't forget that exercise, coupled with your band, will get you there SO much faster, if you aren't doing it already!

I didn't have to crush any of my meds. My pain pills were big honkers too but they went down fine.

And you are a newbie, too! That's great! So it just goes to show that everyone is different. (By the way...I thought I was the only goofball who said "honkers"! LOL) I feel fortunate that I can swallow all my pills, but if I had to crush them, the yogurt idea sounds like a perfect way to go!

P.S. Is that YOUR dog in your avatar? WOW! He/She is something else! LOL I love dogs...have a black lab, a pomeranian, and a tortie cat who THINKS she is a dog. (Eats dog food, drinks out of the toilet, gives the dogs baths....retarded.) The pomeranian rules the roost, of course! LOL

I mixed the crushed pills with Propel, and they went down fine the first month after surgery. Now, I still have problems, so I am cutting the pills in half. Bought enough chewable vitamins to get me through another few weeks.

I don't crush my pills but I cut them into pieces (about 4 pieces). I've never had anything to really get stuck and I've never PB'ed. Maybe I'm too cautious, but I don't want to run the risk of one getting stuck.

Lord, I've been stuck and PB-ed more times than I care to remember. Not so much PB-ing, but I get stuck ALL the time. It's miserable. But always on food, never on my pills. Weird, huh?

Well, good nite, all...have a great week!

LOL, I wish that were my dog. That's UGA, my college football mascot. :biggrin2:

My parents have a chocolate lab, who is awesome.

PB is productive burp. I'm only 10 days post op and I haven't experienced it yet. I'm sure I will soon enough.

I crush mine in the morning and mix with crystal light. Its not a bad taste but i actually like it might continue from now on, and get chewable vitamins...... I drink it on my way to work and then time the finish so i can have Breakfast once i get to work. Good luck:thumbup:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
