Question about a hiatel hernia~please

Recommended Posts

When I was banded last Wednesday my surgeon told me that she repaired a small hiatel hernia I had. I read a little about the hiatel hernia, don't really understand too much about it and wondered this: does that mean some of the reflux, heartburn etc. I had from certain foods/overeating will be gone now? What will I now see in the way of benefit from having that repaired?

Hiatel hernias are often found on patients getting weight loss procedures. I've heard the doctors here say that they have to fix them every week on patients. They are often a source of pain and discomfort. I am sure that having your small hernia repaired now will prevent pain in the future. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

You should feel an improvement in your symptoms.

How have you been doing? Do you feel better yet? I hope that you are feeling well.

I also had a hernia repaired during my lap band surgery. Since that day I have yet to have any heartburn or acid reflux!. Good luck to you on your journey.

Same thing here, I had a large hernia and since it was repaired I have not had any heartburn, acid reflux, etc. Of course, I just started real food a few days ago and haven't eaten near the amounts I used to so that could have something to do with it as well. But my doctor said that I wouldn't have anymore GERD.

I also had a hernia repaired while having the band put on. Before the surgery I had been taking Prilocec (or Nexium) everyday or I would be in horrible discomfort-- after surgery (and having the hernia sewd up) I'm great and haven't needed any med's. Discomfort, reflux, etc is all gone! :cheers2:

My Doctor found that I have a small hiatal hernia and he said that he will repair it when he does the band.I've had reflux since my gallbladder came out but I knew nothing about the hernia til I had a barium swallow.

I had a hiatal hernia repired as well during my procedure. I felt like it probably lengthened my recovery time a little bit, but I was really glad it was done. My doctor was suprised by mine b/c I never complaied about heart burn etc... but in retrospect I had stopped eating foods that caused me discomfort. Now I feel much better! I can even drink orange juice again which was a big problem before!

Yep! Same thing here. I had a large hiatal hernia that my lap band surgeon repaired during the surgery. I had no idea it was there, but had always suffered with heartburn. Four months out & I haven't had 1 bout with heartburn. I'm so glad they found it. However, I was told (and this scared the crap out of me), that if they get large enough, and go undetected, that they have the possibility of bursting (like a balloon) and because this particular kind of hernia is so close to your heart, that if it burst, it could kill you. I'm not trying to freak anyone out, that's just what was told to me by the staff.

I had the hietal hernia too, but never knew I had one. Never experienced reflux or heartburn. In fact the recovery from the repair of it hurt more than when I had it.

I am 4 weeks post-op. I, too, had a small hiatel hernia. I rarely had acid reflux or heartburn, and the hernia never caused me any discomfort before surgery. Within the last few days, the heartburn has gotten worse. Today was my first fill, and I've had heartburn all day. Hope it goes away soon.:smile2:

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
