Having a little difficulty with the preop diet...

Recommended Posts

Hi all...I am scheduled for my band on 2/25...yeah....things actually went very smoothly and quickly for me. I was a bit surprised last Friday when I got the call and was able to schedule my surgery. I have to see the surgeon on the 21st and then after that will be on pretty much a liquid diet. Right now I am following a 1200 calorie diet, but I am having a tough time. Can anyone tell me why the 1200 call for two weeks and has anyone else had trouble sticking with it? I have made huge changes...no pop, eating only three times per day....no snacks....smaller portions. Has anyone failed and gotten "in trouble" by their surgeon? I am not doing horribly, but it is really hard. Thanks everyone!!!

The purpose of the pre-op diet is to shrink the liver. Mine consisted of no fats, Protein Shake (medifast) 3 times a day and Clear Liquids for a week. It's a tough diet but very necessary to a successful surgery. Try keeping yourself busy so you don't think of all you can't eat.

Cool, we have the same banding date!

I'm struggling too, but my doc put me on the SB diet. I start tomorrow.. he wants us to do it 7-10 days before the surgery, which gives me 9 days.

I'm already mourning the stuff I won't be able to have, but I'll be okay. I'll most likely eat a lot of eggs, grilled chicken and veggies.. and almonds.. Just cutting carbs out will do the same things as the liquid diet.

I'm a lower BMI patient (33-34), maybe that's why I wasn't put on any restriction. I was told not to overeat, "eat light low fat meals) a wek b4 banding and full liquids the day before

Well, I think that because my surgery date was so soon I wasn't mentally prepared for the low cal....I am doing much better...I am drinking the Isopure chocolate Protein Shake twice daily and I am amazed at how that curbs my hunger. And you are totally right, boredom is my worst enemy...that and nerves. I am finding myself wanting to eat and then looking at the trigger. Then I ask myself if I am really hungry!!! I have lost 5 pounds in the past 3 days. Don't you think that most of the time we eat for all the wrong reasons!!!!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
