a lot of surgeons do colonoscopies also judy

Val, I am not sure I would want someone to do that (colonoscopy) who did not have a ton of experience! It just seems like it would take a lot of skill. Well, I dont have to worry for another five years now anyway!

I like South Beach, but I have definitely gone off the wagon a few times. Rather than moving to phase 2 I've pretty much been sticking with phase 1. It's more strict, and I haven't certainly starved yet. But Judy, I think I'm having the same issue as you---I'm eating too much. See, books should NEVER tell you to eat until you're full!!! :frown:

It appears that the average time from application to surgery is about 6 months. I have everything done and insurance approval as well. I am hoping for surgery in August. I should know in a few weeks. I am not very patient and it is driving me crazy!!! Is Posner a gastroenterologist? I did not realize that he did colonscopy. I had it done in an outpatient facility in Orchard Park.

Who is going to do your surgery, do you know yet?

I am not losing on SB at least as far as I can tell, I may have to go and order nutrasystem. It worked for me in the past. That is great that you lost the weight already. I did not know that you could lose it in advance of the three hour meeting (not that I would have done any better before then I am now).

Well, good luck with your 3 hour. It was very informative.

Judy, my GI doctor tried to do my colonoscopy and couldn't. If I trust the surgeon to go into my body while looking at a camera I trust he can find his way around a twisted colon. I have to. :frown:

Maybe they can fix it for you. Has it always been that way or did it happen after other surgery or childbirth or something? Does it cause you a lot of trouble, do you have to live on Fiber?

Do you think you will be able to keep the weight off until surgery?

I jumped through my last hoop on Friday! I had my final weigh in and lost 16lbs total. Pretty happy with that. All looks like its a go for June 23rd just waiting for the insurance approval.

Just a few things I thought you guys still in the process would like to know...

I thought this last week I could have a food free for all, but they want you to do phase 1 of South Beach for the week before your surgery ughhh

Great news, good luck!

Any idea why they wait until the last minute for insurance approval? It must be stressful. My insurance does not require pre-approval, but I think most do. It must be terrible to anticipate that you might not get approved, or is there some communication with the insurance company so that you know you are probably approved?

I think Brubear is having her surgery on June 23 as well. Maybe you will meet in the recovery process!

Let us know how it went.

I think that they wait until all of your stuff is in before they get approval from insurance. They want to make sure you did all your tests ect..

Brubear and I are hoping to be roomates!

Did you lose as much as they wanted or were they flexible as long as you lost some? Other than Val I have not heard from anyone else that they lost the full 5%.

You must be so excited!!!

Judy--my appt. with Dr. Hoffman is 8/19 at 8:30 a.m. I really really want a September appointment, maybe the 15th? :)

I have a sinking feeling that my falling off of the wagon will have dire consequences when I weigh in on Wednesday. I starting out so strongly then bit the big one when I had my BFF's shower! :)

Oh well, I'm starting all over on Thursday! :)

They would probably change it, but on the other hand, maybe you have not been as bad as you think! I am going on July 1 and at this point I have maybe lost 3 pounds. I have to add in more vegetables, I feel like all this meat and cheese is so unhealthy. I have to keep rereading the book to remind myself what else to eat.

It just seems like it would make more sense to have the surgery and then diet with the help of the band. This type of dieting I have done my whole life, and obviously, it did not work. I will keep trying I guess. I had a cake here for my nephew last night and boy did I want a bite, but I resisted. I had to give it away though because after they all left I would have probably sat with a fork and eaten it all. I kind of wish it were here now, LOL!

When do you anticipate surgery?

Hi Judy,

Here are some links to a couple of good yahoo groups that helped me out when I first started South Beach Diet a long time ago.

They're monitored pretty closely to keep out the spammers and to help people on the diet share ideas and recipes.< /p>

Newbies2SouthBeachDiet : Newbies2SouthBeachDiet

SouthBeachDiet_Recipes : South Beach Diet RECIPES

I especially used the South Diet Recipes group a lot!

Now that I know BGH prefers SBD i'll have to refamiliarize myself with the diet again!

Judy- I lost a little over 5%. I needed to lose 14 and I lost 16.

Bloomerific- is this your 1 month visit with the dietician that you are worried about? I only lost 6 lbs by then and yes they were not happy but they told me to focus and lose the rest. By the time I saw Dr Hoffman I had lost a little over 10 and he seemed happy with it. Only by the final weigh in had I lost the 5% and that made Lisa happy so she could submitt it to insurance. Hope that helps

Good job! My insurance does not require the weight loss, but the clinic wants me to lose it anyway. I guess we will see how it goes, I have really realized that I am such a bitch without carbs. Sure hope that passes (so do my friends and co-workers, LOL)!

You did so well pre-surgery, you will probably do terrific after!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
