opinion on insurance coverage

Recommended Posts

As yet, my insurance Health Alliance doen't cover the Lap band. Are there insurance companies out there that didn't cover the band but are covering it now? I was just curious if Health Alliance is slow coming around or if all insurance companies are slow coming around? What's the popular concensus...are more and more insurance companies covering it or are they all holding out?

I have medicare and everything went through the first time. I didn' have to be approved before hand. I quess I was one of the lucky ones. I was ready to fight but didn't need to. If I were you I would fight and tell them how much better the lap-band is.

My insurance does not cover the band yet, but Blue Cross is covering the band in other parts of the U.S. . I self payed, was not going to fight with them , I'd still be fighting and appealing, Iam 19 lbs from goal weight 11 months later

i don't have an issue with self-pay. It's not the 14 to 18 thousand that bothers me. I'm 5'7" and weigh 400 lbs with sleep apnea. what if something happens on an uncovered insurance procedure? I don't think I could afford that! Right now, I'm being patient...hoping that it will be covered someday soon. In the meantime, I go to the club 5 days a week. I swim 2/3 of a mile 3 days a week and the other 2 days I lift for 20 minutes and then swim for 1/3 of a mile. I'm feeling better than I have in years and I'm 39 years young. I'm also eating better, unfortunately, I have a "HUGE" appetite. I try to curb it but we all know how hard that is to do all the time. I have faith that the lap-band is what I need and I'll be getting one soon. I haven't given up hope!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
