How much should my stomach hold?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I am now six weeks out from surgery. I have been eating without really any problems with foods, except wheat bread making me feel sick. I am wondering about how much your stomach should hold before a fill and to still lose weight if you are eating healthy? I have felt restriction all along so far and am wondering if I am about right or if I need a fill yet. For example, for lunch I can eat almost one slice of white bread with a slice or two of turkey and one piece of cheese and feel really full. Same if I eat just a couple of ounces of Protein or a really small salad. For dinner, I can usually eat approximately 2-3 oz of meat and maybe a 1/3-1/2 cup of cooked carrots or something like that. I am just wondering about how much at each meal is normal to continue losing weight, about a cup of total food? I would think I should still be able to continue losing with this amount of food but I have plateaued out this week. Thanks!

Everyone's metabolism is different, but it's not at all unusual to slow down or even plateau for a while even when eating very little. It's just the way our bodies work.

If you feel satisfied on a small amount of food for several hours after a meal, you most likely don't need a fill. If you're eating what you listed above--that sounds to me like a great menu. Your weight will probably start to drop again, especially if you're exercising and drinking lots of Water.

Don't worry--you're doing great!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
