Family tells me what to eat and do!!!

Recommended Posts

I am going crazy!! My family - mainly my older sister, is telling what to eat when to eat, when not to eat. It drives me crazy. I am doing everything right just as the doctor has said, I've been losing as I am suppose to. I've tried nicely to talk to her and others and they just say "Oh I just care about you" Its my life. I am the one who decides when, what, how much, ect.. to eat. The band is life altering they don't know how I am feeling. UUGG!! Thanks for letting me vent. Any comments are welcome.

Say "I'm doing just what my Dr wants me to" and smile sweetly. After about 100 times she should take the hint (maybe)

I was going to suggest saying "FU", but I suppose you get more flies with honey, eh?

Tell your family that you appreciate their concern but that you are following the prescribed diet and tell them if they have any questions, you would be happy to make a group appointment for them to see the registered dietician.

I can see how this will be a problem for me also. I love my dad dearly but ever since I got heavy, whenever we are together, he watches what I eat. I was just banded on 2/11 and I know that between him and 2 of my 4 children, I will be watched like a hawk. I know they mean well, but it makes you want to scream!!

My DH has become my food patrol and my diet cop. I to am going crazy. I hear the following constantly....

"Can you eat two of those? I think one would be better."

"No. You can't have any of my popcorn. It's bad for you."

"Are you sure you can eat that?"

Uuhhhmmmm.... I'm telling Dr. Chang that you ate that."

"After all you spent on this surgery, are you going to eat that and mess it up?"

"Did you go to the gym today? why not?"

The interesting thing is, is that I am following the rules. I exercise 4 -5 times a week. I don't eat sweets, carbonated drinks, excessive carbs, etc. I watch and weigh my portions. So this drives me to insanity. He also tells me how proud he is of me, and how good I look, and he notices my little milestones like "Wow, I can see you have a waist now." "Your smile is so pretty now that your double chin is disappearing." "You are REALLY slimming down your butt. It's starting to look hot!" So I do get kudos, but the nagging is grating on me. He's more obsessed about all this than I am!!

My Question To You Is.. Does She Have A Weight Problem? If She Does, It Will Be A Problem Because Of The Envy Issues. If She Is Not, Just Tell Her To Mind Her Own Health.

OH how that reminds me of when I did my first "tell everyone diet". Was that EVER a mistake. My mom and sister were no big deal, infact my mom embraced it and started doing it herself.

My dad though  yeah I was ready to smack him with a frying pan, preferably cast Iron. I would make something according to the nutritionists recipe (she was awesome) and he would critique EVERY THING. Finally I had to tell him to back off or he would eat the recipe book the hard way. Told him if I wanted to eat a cheese burger I would, and could, just had to make sure it was cooked a certain way and was sans bun (I have IBS .. bread is bad).

ETC ETC

He got better for a lil bit, then because the pain in the butt again. But he is my dad, I love the butt head.

"I appreciate that you are doing this because you care for me, but I am following my doctors orders, and you are driving me nuts".

Alternately, start bugging them equally about something else. When they get on you for it, tell them that you'll knock it off if they will. Or when your sister asks if you should be eating something say "Yes, this is fine, should you be eating that??" heh

DH made the mistake of calling me out on all the candy I've been eating Friday night in bed. I got real defensive, cause he emberassed me!

I think I said something like "I like it, and I'm eatin' it. You got a problem with it??". Then I shoved another Junior Mint in my mouth out of principal.

I don't like people tryin' to tell me what to do, and I always rebel if they try. I dunno, if I wanna eat candy I am going to. If I shouldn't be doing it, I have to make that decision.. someone telling me not to won't help.

My sister always asked before I got a good fill-- "How can you eat that much? I thought your pouch was like the size of a golfball". I just told her, "Sometimes I can eat a lot, sometimes I can't. Why do you care?" She would shrug, and that was that.

Darn nosey people

Isn't it amazing how the moment food stops being an obsession for you, it becomes one for all those around you?

I'll side on them trying to be really helpful and supportive and not wanting to see you fail. Just let them know how much you love them for their support. You could always go up to your sister every single time you want to eat something or drink something and say 'hey can I have this?" or even better. "hey can I have this bite?" - for every single bite! Turn it back. Of course if she says no, just do it anyway lol.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
