AP Band - restriction after first fill

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else have the AP large band? I got 4cc's in the 14(I think) cc band. I feel massive amounts of restriction. I'm amazed. Has anyone else had the same experience? Does the restriction stay? (It's only been two days.)

I didn't have very much restriction from the 1st fill of 5ml - maybe a couple days? But I'm feeling pretty restricted from the 2nd fill which brought me to 6.8 ml. I'm still on post-op liquids and I can feel it trickling down... I'm going to be interested to see whether there are foods I can't manage now.

I got my first fill yesterday for a total of 3cc. I was told to do clear fluids for 2 days then full liquids for 2 days then mushy.....well I was sooooo hungry I came home and tried to drink some apple juice, then my Protein Drink, then IK finally ate some pb and cheese crackers....I chewed them up really well and did not feel any restriction or full feeling. I go back in 2 weeks for a checkup, I hope I can get a few more ccs so I can feel full or atleast restricted....I hear about people being able to only eat 1/2 cup or 1 cup and then are full...that is what I want.....I'm scared that I won't beable to control this eating thing......... any advice would be helpful...............

I was filled with 4cc's yesterday. I am trying to stick to liquids but they seem to go right through. I did eat really cooked cauliflower and felt full after a few bites. When does the restrictions show up? Is it almost right away? or is their some delay.

moosictchr, its great that you've gotten a sense of restriction from your first fill. From my experience, if you feel the restriction straight away, it usually settles down a bit after 2 or 3 days. How much, is anyone's guess.

seajules - don't worry at all. Most people won't feel a great amount of restriction for the first few fills. It all depends on the person and every one of us is different.

I've had fills where for a week afterwards I'd be like .. well THAT didn't work! ... then boom ... sudden restriction. Then other times I'd walk out of the office, get in the car, have a drink of Water and nearly choke cause the restriction hit suddenly. Then some days I can eat a house, others I can't get through a serve of tuna salad.

The band can well and truly be a fickle thing .. but despite the ups and downs, its a wonderful tool.

I have the APL band and up today got 2 more cc's for a total of 9cc's. I had some restriction with 7cc's but was eating too much and I wanted to be on lock down for a while. (We are going on a cruise in 5 weeks!)

I am hoping that this does the trick, but that I am not too miserable!

I have the 14 cc Inamed band (I think it's called). I also heard that the newly manufactured ones after a certain date are prefilled with 3 cc's. I'm not sure about mine but will find out when I go for my first fill on March 7. Right now, I can eat the world as I have no restriction to speak of.

I have the same band and I had my second fill on Jan. 30, for a total of 4cc. The restriction was unbelievable, but after two to three weeks, it does get loose. You will have some restriction, but not as much as you had a first.

I have the AP (small) band (10ccs) My fills were 1.5,1.5,1.5, and 2 ccs. I always felt restriction after a fill, but it only lasted for about 5 or 6 days. Then is would go away. With my fourth fill, though, I have more restriction than in the past and it has stayed - I think I am getting close to my sweet spot.

I have the AP standard size band (10cc). I had my first fill on 1/2. My surgeon put in 3 ccs. I couldn't get the test Water down, so he backed out a cc. The Water went right down and I felt great. I could tell I had a restriction, and (after a few days) I could still eat real food. I lost 4 pounds the week after the fill!

However, after a few weeks, the restriction seemed to wear off. I've lost about 8 pounds since the fill (7 weeks), but most of that was in the first two weeks after the fill - really no loss for the last 4 weeks. I am going in next week for a little bump. We'll see what happens. I don't want to be one of those folks who live on liquids and slime up solids. I'd rather lose a little more slowly and have a somewhat normal life.

It's all individual, and I felt restriction after the first fill too. I have the same APS band but was given 6cc at my first fill. It was good for about 3 weeks then felt like I could eat more (but not as much as before!). Second fill was another cc and it was again, great for 3 weeks, then I was noticeably hungry and could eat faster. Third fill .6cc much much tighter feeling...good for 4 weeks, wasn't sure if I needed another fill at all but I did get .2cc more last Friday.

Anyway that seems to be the pattern for me. Other people say they don't feel much difference and then 2 weeks later the fill kicks in. I only experienced this once and it might have had to do with my TOM... anyway hope that helps. Enjoy your restriction while it lasts! You'll be ready for more in a few weeks, I bet.

I don't have the large band...mine is the 10cc band, but from my experience, I feel quite restricted immediately after a fill...sometimes lasting up to a week, then there is nothing. I have had 4 fills so far, going for #5 tonight and right now am at 8.5 cc's. It is different for everyone. My mother is at 7.5 and can barely eat solid food after a month. Enjoy the restriction as long as it lasts, when you start feeling it loosen, go quickly for your next fill to avoid gaing back any pounds.

I just had my first fill less than an hour ago. Mine holds 15cc and they put in 4cc. I could not swallow Water or saliva. They took out a little over 1cc. Water is going down ok but now I'm nervous to try anything else.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
