Protein shake.....is this okay?

Recommended Posts

So I am trying to get used to the Protein shakes. This is what I have been putting in the blender and having for lunch. For those for you that have been banded will this work when I am in the mushie and normal eating stages?

This is what I put together:

Protein powder

ice cubes

1 Tbs Peanut Butter

1/2 cup frozen raspberries

Water or non-dairy coffee Creamer for a little liquid to help blend it

Thanks,

Rondi

Just make sure the Protein powder you are using is designed for bariatric patients and not for body builders! Many of the Protein powders athletes used are loaded with carbs because that's what they need........we don't need that! Check your label and make sure what you're using.

Another good way to give variety to shakes without adding calories is to use the Torani or DaVinci sugar free syrups. You can find them at Walmart or TJMax or on websites such as netrition.com or bariatriceating.com. DaVinci Gourmet – Flavored Syrups, sauces And Tea Concentrates gives lots of wonderful recipes for shakes.< /p>

My doctor encourages us to try to get all our Protein and calories from solid foods, so I didn't use Protein shakes in the mushy phase, and I rarely drink them now.

Occasionally I'll be running late and need an on-the-go meal so I'll throw together a Protein Drink, but it's probably happened only 2-3 times in the last 8 weeks. I also use Protein drinks for two days after I get a fill, and it's recommended to go back on liquids for two days if I have a PB or vomiting issue (so far so good).

I agree with the previous poster about adding sugarfree Syrup - I like Da Vinci syrups and found them at a local discount grocer for about $3.50/liter. They certainly improve the taste of the Protein powder!

My new favorite recipe, discovered during my two days of liquids last week, is 4 oz sugarfree Oregon Chai Concentrate plus 4 oz Silk soymilk mixed with a scoop of All the whey vanilla powder. I drank it cold with ice and it was quite nice :-)

Good luck as you move along in the process!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
