drinking through a straw

Recommended Posts

I keep forgetting I am not allowed to drink through a straw-

I look down after drinking half my libation, there is the straw (which i then throw out!)

I read not to use one because we tend to drink too fast that way and swallow air. Has anyone else heard anything regarding drinking through a straw??

Honestly, if you be careful about how you do everything, you'll be just fine. If I were you, though, I would steer away from it, but that's me.

I have been so meticulous with all the other rules, this one just doesnt seem to process in my brain- I have only done it twice- but each time i get so irritated with myself because I automatically put the straw there without thinking. I really do have to pay more attention!

I think it's a silly rule personally. I get just as much air in my stomach drinking through a sport cap on a water bottle. If you are comfortable while drinking with a straw, talk to your surgeon and see what he/she says about allowing you to do so.

I wasn't really told not to use one, and I find that I get less air with a straw than without one, so I don't really worry about it. But, you should definitely get your doctor's opinion

I wasn't told not to use one. Actually, for the liquid phase, I was told to use a straw, as anything that couldn't go through it wasn't to be eaten.

I have never heard about not drinking through a straw. I have used one quite a few times in the past 3 months and I am still here.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
