pre-band qualify question

Recommended Posts

hi all,

ok so i'm sitting here reading the board and i had a slight panic. i'm going to my first seminar on weds. and will then make the consult apt. etc afterwards...but i was sitting here thinking 'will they approve me (insurance) if i haven't had a physical in a couple of years?' Is this a weird freak out? I go to doctors often because of some other issues, but i haven't had a physical in forever. does that matter?

also, someone was just telling me that if i haven't went to "paid" diet plan (such as jennry craig)in the last year i won't qualify (now she never had the surgery so who knows if that's true). Does that sound right though? I mean i'm a lifetime member of J.C and been to weight watchers a million times, but in the last year i've been attempting to diet alone.

sorry for the long rant..

Dont start to panic until you go to the seminar. They will give you plenty of info there. It really depends on the type of your insurance and what they specifically require. I hadn't had an actual "physical" in I dont know how long. But had been to doctors for other things. I attended my seminar on Oct. 4 and had surgery on Jan. 7. Things went through without a problem. Good luck!

Welcome. I would advise calling your insurance company and asking them to send you the requirements they require for approval of weight loss surgery. My insurance carrier required 6 months of a medically supervised diet but yours might differ.

I never had a physical either and I got approved; but, I have Aetna and they required 6 months of visits with my doctor regarding "dieting".. but, my doctor never really put me on anything; I just went in and we chit chatted and she knew what to put down. I had tried other diets in the past like WW and Atkins and even pills.. I did have to put all that down, but I didn't have to have proof of it or anything. Some insurances don't require this and some only require three months... Mine also required proof of being over 40 BMI for 5 years, which was quite easy. I started my whole process in 7/07 and I'm getting banded in 15 days. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
