Oregon, can I get insurance?

Recommended Posts

I have been obese for many years and have tried everything out there. My work insurance policy through western benefits doesn't cover surgery for weight issues. Is there a secondary insurance I can pick up that will? Insurance stuff is like Greek to me if someone can point me in the right direction I would be very grateful. It seems to perfect to be able to pick up an insurance coverage just to get an expensive surgery done, is it?

Thanks.

Hi there! Eugene, Oregon here. I looked all over trying to find a way to cover the surgery..... My old insurance wouldn't cover it either. However, my company switched to BCBS of Minnesota and they do cover it.... You have to do 6 months worth of dietitian meeting but it's not too bad. I have 2 more of those and then request preauthorization from the insurance. What part of Oregon are you in?

I am using Bariatric center here in Eugene... They are much more expensive for the surgery 23k than say the bariatric center in CoosBay he is only 10k. They both have financing options you may look into those if your insurance doesnt plan on switching anytime soon.

Good luck :cursing:

Grants Pass. I had a family member get a bypass there in Eugene. Great results and very happy with it. Best of luck. I don't think my company is planning on switching insurance companies any time soon they just got their current one two years ago.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
