Opti-fast Intolerance??

Recommended Posts

I am on my 6th day of pre-op diet. I was instructed to take opti-fast 900 (4 packages/day and as much non starch veggies as I like for 2 weeks.

My problem is with the Opti-fast. I can tolerate the taste / texture, but within 15-30 of drinking the Opti-fast I become ill (nauseated, vomiting, tired, etc).

I have tried taking it as the instructions say to make it and drink it. I've tried making it with ice in a blender and eating it. I've tried taking only 1/2 pack to an 1/8th of a pack at a time, eating with / without veggies but each time I've ended up with the same reaction.

Has any one else had the same thing? or any suggestions on how to make it stay in me?

Thanks

I drank nothing but Optifast for 8 weeks but was on 5 shakes a day and it was less potent - I think it was Optifast 800. Make sure you have plenty of liquids a day - it makes a big difference. I was told to have at least 64 ounces of sugar free beverages a day like crystal light, Decaf tea and coffee and Water. Try that and see if it makes a difference.

I had an allergic reaction to the Opti-Fast. I swelled up like a balloon all in my face after drinking it. My Dr. told me to try slim fast made with soy milk instead of the Opti-fast - and that seemed to clear things up for me.

hi alway sme

I had a reaction so bad I couldnt take it. I was so scared the surgeon wouldnt operate coz i wouldnt lose enough weight before the op. My dietitan put me on a high Protein extermely low carb low fat diet for 2 weeks. I lost 19 pounds!!!!

It was easier for me than Optifast as it made me sooooooooo sick

hope that helps

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
