Tracking calories: Weight Watchers or Daily Plate?

Recommended Posts

Has someone some suggestion on which one to choose, I like WW because it has the points system, and I love daily plate because it is free. Both do the same, count your calories and keep it to an ideal day.

both work well.... just think of which will work best for you...

With WW you track in a little book and daily plate you track on the computer... which is more convenient for you... try doing both for a little while n see which you like better...

I personally dont do either.. i just make sure i k=make healthy choices all day based on calories and Protein... and it has worked for me... The only time i track myself for a couple of days is when i hit a plateau to see what i need to change..:)

Good Luck with any decision that you make:thumbup:

Thanks, your reply is great. From it I figure out that it is not the program that you choose that will make you successful, but the choices one makes about food. Right now, I am taking bad choices... I'll look for Protein and low cal. Really, thank you very much.

I LOVE the daily plate. I've done WW Online/Etools for ages and I much prefer TheDailyPlate because a. It's free and b. it breaks down all of my nutritional intake for me. I like seeing how much Fiber, Protein, carbs etc... that I take in in a day... week... or month.

Just my .02

I love Daily Plate also. :thumbup:I try to make good choices all day, but it helps to see when I am behind on my Protein or had more carbs then I thought during the day.

Plus, i have never eaten nything, and I men anything, tht Daaily Plate didn;t have in its encyclopedia of food. So, it is very handy.

i really like daily plate and spark people, but use My food Diary :: Online Calorie Counter w/ Diet Journal & Exercise Log . the downside is, it's not free. about 10 a month. i had a free membership for awhile (to try it) and was hooked. i figure i used to eat at least $10 a week in food / coffee, i can splurge on 10 a month for a tool to help me lose the weight.

Well, I have looked at all these sites, they are great. So far I joined daily plate, spark people , FitDay - Free Weight Loss and Diet Journal and I am going to begin using them to see which one fits better my plan. I did not enter into My food diary, since it is not free. All have different appeal to me: daily plate has extensive comments on food and breaks the consumption into many categories (fat, Protein, etc...), spark people customizes the plan to one self and gives choices for mini goals, it motivates you to change your lifestyle, fitday has a really nice ways to summarize and show progress.

Also, today I found out that Real Age is doing some challenges, including workouts, they look great (and they are free!).

Well, I still love Weight Watchers, specially for its points system, but may be I should go with the real thing: knowing the carbs, fats, Protein, Fiber and Water in my food. Spark people seems to have a point system (but points are not related to food intake, but to website use) and the daily plate does break your food into carbs, fat, protein, and shows the food nutritional values and comments when adding it to the list. FitDay - Free Weight Loss and Diet Journal also shows the nutritional value and has BIG letters, I like that very much, it has too many choices for food, the search has to be done with some description of the food eg. regular coffee instead of coffee. It has really nice reports page, it includes nutrition, calories eaten or burned, weight change, activity progress and other. Fitday also has a journal, a goal setter page and a calendar that shows what you have been doing. It seems very good. My food diary seems a pretty good application similar to Fitday, more user friendly and includes some improvements like having a comment on progress, easily adding food to meal time by checking instead of chooosing the meal from a drop down list. It has a fridge picture for items you usually eat, that seems a great thing. Somehow you link what you eat with what is on your fridge.

Body Bugg seems great, but pricing is high. I liked very much its resources page. I use polar to count my calories. I paid less than $100 for a polar that tracks calories and heart beat, besides I bought it to stay in the cardio zone, and not for the calorie tracking. My doctor tells me that usually the polar overestimates the calories spent when he compared it to his machine.

Thanks everyone, you are great! :biggrin2:

Losingjumes, Suzzie and Jeni your weight loss is inspiring! keep it going! :)

Day One: 02-11-2008

I like spark people follow up and customized program that includes a menu and exercise plan (cardio and strength).

Fitday is not user friendly, until you get to know how to do the searches> search your food by food category. It has a very nice interface for activities. Spark people and daily plate are cumbersome to enter activities.

The daily plate diary is a plus! wonderful. It is easy to find and has a drop down menu.

The daily plate calorie breakdown showing calories per food is really nice.

I like the fit day report on food nutrient requirements. I don't like that all Snacks go to the "snack" category and it does not show the time of the day. And I could not find where to keep track of Water glasses

Day two: 02-12-2008

Daily plate: it helps to learn food value by looking at the food pie chart. (low cal count)

Fitday: so simple now. (medium cal count)

Spark people: nothing to write about, I don´t like today´s menu plan: it is sweet and starchy. (high cal count)

Finally I decided to stay with the daily plate. Spark people is cumbersome, and fit day too... and for nutriotional requirements, well, I will get Vitamins to stay on the safe side.

I also use fitday.

Jack, I have the installer for the fitday program, and you can retrieve your registration key from their website, if you're interested in installing it again.

I agree with previous posters that is not so much which program you choose to log your food....as long as you log at least in the beginning......I firmly believe success can be measured by how well we stick to the eating program. Choosing the right things to put into our new pouch is so very important. If you are not getting enough Protein daily or Water or vegtables then you are not going to see the weightloss that you might if you were.

I personally began using fitday.com then switched to SparkPeople.com and I love it there.....I have my own blog and journal their most everyday. IT too is a totally free site. I have used DailyPlate and it is also a good site.

Good Luck to you on your journey!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
