Why no caffeine and no carbonation

I was informed by my surgeon absolutely no carbonated drinks and that they would probably come back up anyway because the pouch is going to be so small. My nutritionist recommended a book called weight loss surgery for dummies, I'll check in there and give you a better reply later!

I just checked the book, basically it says that it will give you gas that has to come out one way or the other even if you let it get flat.

I got the book on Amazon, I couldn't find it at any bookstores in town. You can also try half.com it's an ebay company, I've had good luck with them also.

You can slowly wean yourself off the caffeine before surgery. slowly reduce the amount you drink until you're off it.

I was so worried about missing sodas that I gave up my 5-6 daily diet cokes before my first consult. I figured, better to know BEFORE surgery if it was going to be too hard to give them up.

Here's the funny thing: I tried a soft drink at Christmas, and it tasted like ANTI-FREEZE. ICK, chemical city--I can't believe I drank those willingly.

I can't tell you how my band tolerates the carbonation, because I couldn't make myself swallow that mess.

My surgeon says that I can have carbonated beverages (diet of course.) He reccommends pouring over ice and letting sit for 5-10 minutes so it goes a little flat first. He does say that not all people handle them well, but that most people don't have a problem. I haven't introduced sodas yet, but I will probably give them a try within the next week or so. Just goes to show how every doctor is different. It's important to follow your docs rules though.

Oh, got to add....

ICE is something new for me...and a straw. I don't have any beverage w/o a ton..packed to the max of ice...and then a straw.

Kalia is right...the coldness helps it go down better.

Good luck Yellowrose, I,m sure I can give up the diet soda but I,m a caffeine-a-holic. Can anyone tell me if I can resume coffee after surgery, at least Decaf? JohnC

I swear I could have started this thread...... I am freaking out about not having my diet pepsi. I feel like I could give up almost anything else but that......my nutrionist said that I will be one of the ones that tries and makes myself very sick. Maybe not after all the reading I have done on this site but then again.... maybe. LOL.. from the very depressed Lori (only because of the soda loss...lol) :)

If you feel you "need" the caffeine for a pick up, you might find after surgery that you are not as tired as you used to be.

Eating less carbs will give you more energy. Carbs slow us down and make us sleepy. High levels of Protein don't do that.

I can't believe how I wake up so much earlier and less groggy now.

I have heard different things about caffeine- my surgeon said it would be okay. I can only assume that some rec no caffeine b/c of it's effect on gastric motility.

That being said, i did have a skinny latte last night, (at least i got some skim milk that way) Have any of you heard why no caffeine?

Gastric Motility? What does that mean? I'm still looking for why no caffeine. I am going to attend a seminar on Tuesday up in Phoenix so I am going to ask then I will post the answer here.

      Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

      Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

        I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
