Had to share my 1 week post-op news!

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery 1 week ago, on 8/26 and went for my follow-up visit this afternoon - 9/3. I'm so thrilled. In the 1st week since surgery, I lost 11 pounds. And totally in the past 3 weeks, which includes the 2 week pre-op diet I was on, I've lost a total of 25 pounds!

I *know* this won't continue at this rate, but I feel really good about the beginning. And I can *wish* it would continue at this rate!

Anyway, I'm onto the Phase II - "full liquid". Tonight's sugar free, fat free, lactose free chocolate pudding was like luxury!

Wishing us all continued success.

Mary

Mary -- that's awesome! Congrats.

My one week post op is Friday, and I'll be thrilled if I come close to half your success!

Are you feeling any restriction...I was until today...and now there's none. I know I'd have more severe symptoms if it slipped (at least from everything I've read), so I think it's just that the stomach has healed a little faster. Tried drinking some Water and that didn't even really fill me up. I'll work harder on Water -- all day -- tomorrow, and hopefully it will help.

Also noticed a little bulge where I think the port is... hmmm.

Any more August bandsters with similar non-restriction (or bulge) stories??

Elizabeth, I was banded on Aug. 4th. and feel no restriction for supper tonight I had a whole hambuger with chese and tomatoe on it plus ate my vegtables and could of ate more, it's now midnight and I'm hungry again. bread goes down without a problem and I can drink, drink, and drink and it dosen't fill me at all. I go for a fill on the 19th and hope this does something for me. I think the wt. I have lost is from willpower not restriction. I feel like I really have to try as those that know I had the surgery are always watching me and are probally monitoring my wt. loss more than me. Roxanne

Congratulations, Mary! Even though we all know that this stage is not about weight loss, it's a great boost to see those numbers changing at the doctor's office. Enjoy your change in diet!!

Elizabeth, at 2 weeks out I'm feeling almost no restriction when I eat. But I've discovered that I really HAVE to work on eating slowly, because 3 or 4 ozs. of egg salad fills me up in a way I've never experienced before. If I eat that quickly--and it's really only several large bites, so I could--I can get uncomfortably full before I know what's hit me.

Last night, while preparing dinner and waiting for the kids to get home I had several bites of ice cream. The amazing thing is that at dinner time I truly was not interested in putting anything else in my mouth. And I felt crappy to boot--I hadn't had any Protein since noon and my body sure didn't need sugar to get me over that hunger hump. It wasn't until about 2 hours later that I wanted anything.

This is really a change for me--I'm going to have to think about each and every bite that goes in because there is just not as much room as there used to be. Yay!

hi guys, what awesome results.. I was banded sept 21 2005 almost 3 weeks out, I have lost 30 pounds I wonder if i am eatting enough. I am always hungry but make sure i never eat more than 2 oz of food at a time. and usually only eat 3-4 times a day.. I am on mushies and Soups. I am scared to death i will over eat and cause my band to slip or pouch to explode :P

This is a VERY old post that was bumped. In general it's a great idea to check the dates on posts you're responding to, just to make sure they're current.

Feel free, Johnette, to start a new thread. Congratulations on your banding!

yeah, I had to re-read Alex's message 4 times before it started to make any sense... then I looked at the post date! I was thinking whoa--that's some killer fill you got there...

So Alex, you've been banded OVER TWO YEARS now, so, please share some of your before and your now. How you have adjusted to life now that you're no longer carring an additional average sized woman around in your skin? My son doesn't believe that it is the same person in your before and after pix. Not because he doesn't believe you didn't lose the weight, but that you also seemed to lose at least 15 years of careworn from your beautiful face.

Please share with us some of the thing that you now take for granted, things that you thought you would never, ever be able to do.

Someone bumped one of Zoe's old threads today, a thread that had to do with goals, and where she was personally with the goals. (It may have even been Zoe herself that bumped it... )

VQ, you just gave me the warm fuzzies!! :P

I don't really have an answer to your question about things I thought I'd never be able to do. I still haven't done the one thing I thought I'd want to do--rollerblade with my daughters. But that's because they haven't shown any interest in it so far. Yet my future is sunnier than ever because I know that when they DO show an interest in that, or biking, or hiking, or whatever, I know I'll be right there with them.

So I guess that's the answer. I'm a participant, not a spectator. I FIT in the world in ways I never did before. It's a joy each and every day. :(

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
