Anyone in Vegas/Henderson NV area???

Recommended Posts

Hi all... I'm seriously thinking about getting banded within the next 4 months. My insurance does not cover it, so I will be paying for it myself. Going to Mexico is not an option for me. I'd like to know if anyone has gone to Dr.James Atkinson (I went to his seminar in October) or any other doctor's in or around Las Vegas or Henderson areas. Also who you would recommend and why...

I'm 36, 5'2", 265lbs... :)

Thanks in advance for any help!

HI, welcome to LBT!

I am not from your area, but read quite a bit about band meet ups happening in Vegas---so since it is a common vacation spot you should be able to meet up with lots of bandsters!!!

Sometimes when we post something, it gets lost in the shuffle of threads, so I clicked it (bumped it) even though I cannot answer your direct question thinking it might bring it up to where new people could see it, and you might get some better responses!!!

Welcome to LBT---banding saved me, gave me back the life I wanted! I am not in your area, I am in New Mexico--but would gladly answer any of your questions!

Kat

Hi Yvonne 72, I moved your thread to the Nevada area. Hopefully that will let more people in those areas see your question.

Thank you! These docs are in a "center of excellence" too!

I've made up my mind to go ahead with the procedure. I'm paying cash so I have some bills to pay off and I'll be on my way within 2 months! I'm so excited!!! (I just paid off my husband's student loan on Friday- WOOOHOooooo)

I was banded 2/14/08 by Atkinson & Soong. I am doing GREAT and have lost 20lbs so far in only 2 weeks. They are very dedicated doctors and Dr Soong has emailed me personally to check in on me. I also payed cash and had the surgery the next week!!!

I am having my surgery 4/23/08 and Dr. Soong is doing the surgery. I am looking for a support group to join. Does anyone know of one that meets either online or in person?

It is so great to hear that Dr Soong is so good. He is who is going to do my surgery also!

I am so impressed with how you are doing! I pray that I do as well!

I just had my surgery 2-29-08 and still feel like I have a couple of lug nuts jammed up in my upper stomach. Dr Atkins did my surgery and all is well. The first couple of days are a little rough but I've felt worse.

this is going to keep me alive longer to raise my foster kids I adopted.

Thank you. I told the kids they have to get a lapband also so we can save on groceries........it didn't go over very well. I am having a hard time drinking more that 1/2oz so I think I'll go see the doc tomorrow just to make sure. It is very uncomfortable but I've had back aches that were much worse.

your doc knows best so use him. it appears that everyone has a different experience but there are some common ones as well and limited intake the first few days seems to be one of the commons. keep us posted and take care. g2s

Last night the discomfort was keeping me awake and just as fast as you can open your hand it went away. All the discomfort just fell away. Had a good sleep and was able to drink this morning. All is not perfect but much better today.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
