Egads! I Have Ketosis!!!!

Recommended Posts

Shortgal,

You are right about hygene, but poor oral hygene doesn't produce stinky pee. :)

The bad breath and stinky pee that accompany weight loss are a whole different thing. That comes from the inside out. The faster you are losing fat (regardless of the method) the stinkier it gets. Atkins type diets when followed correctly tend to have higher weight loss rates. It's all about converting fat to energy.

If you are a few days out of surgery and white tongue you may be looking at thrush...this happens from the anibotics and sometimes needs another medication to help clear that up.
This happened to me after lap-band surgery. I often get skin or internal yeast infections after I have antibiotics, but this is the first time I've ever gotten thrush...

I was first given Diflucan, an antifungal pill, for five days - the skin and vaginal infections went away, but not the mouth or intenstinal yeast. Then I was given liquid Nystatin that I rinsed my mouth with then swallowed. That finally did away with the thrush (yeast) in my mouth and intenstinal system (causes stinky pee and diarrhea).

I think it's possible that low carb eating will help decrease yeast overgrowth in one's system, but for some antifungal meds are needed.

Grace from Utah--does the bad breath ever go away?

I had bloodwork done Friday (2/8) and today (2/11), but I'm hygenically paranoid now and don't want to talk to anyone "up close and personal"!!

Making some definite changes in my dental habits to compensate but am worried (1) it's not enough and (2) that it will never go away!!

Thanks in advance...:)

Depending on what I eat, I flip flop in and out of ketosis. I can always tell when it happens becuase my mouth feels yucky and I have a terrible metallic taste in my mouth. I change up my diet from day to day, and the carb days are the days my mouth feels normal. The high protien days, I notice it within two days. It's an interesting thing. I am so much more in tune with my body since being banded. I catch on to all the little nuances now, and am fascinated with this truly amazing piece of organic machinery!!!!

I always laugh that I should have paid more attention in Health Class (hello, back in the 60's!!!)--this ketosis and the gout from two weeks ago is a shock to me!

However, I too am simply amazed at how we can manipulate ourselves (and our health) just by what we put in these machines!! I have never dwelled so much on ME: what I'm eating/drinking, what I'm going to eat/drink, how much Protein I'm getting in, how much Water, what do I need to balance today out---unbelievable, Aubrie!!

I USED to dwell on my food intake before--like where was I going to get my next Hostess cupcake  !!!

This is a whole new ballgame for all of us!! :)

I'm being transparent and a little gross here. Sorry in advance. I've been in Ketosis three times now. In addition to the stinky breath, I notice that my skin (mostly my face) and hair are oily and I don't smell very good. Yes, my urine has a stronger odor too. Extra showers and deodorant soap help temporarily, but I swear it's as if the fat my body burned has turned to liquid and is being secreted by my pores. Luckily, it only lasts a couple of days. Diet correction and drinking extra Water really help to flush things out. I am sure I can't be the only one out there this happens to. Ewwww! :smile2:

All those catabolic breakdown processes have to dump their little biochemical waste products somewhere....and it's better than to keep them inside, rotting our innards, eh?

Much of our cultural aversion to body odors have been sadly misguided by the entire cosmetics and toilet Water industry.

I took your advice, Googled some rather dry (though interesting) reading, and your answer makes perfect sense, Jack. Thank you for the explanation in layman's terms. Seems dear ol' Dad's bit of wisdom was right all along- It is better out than in. :scared2:

Perhaps you are right regarding our "sadly misguided, cultural aversion to body odors", but a couple shots of strategically placed Right Guard on a warm August day does much to enhance the chiropractic doctor / patient relationship, and the close personal space they may share.

Just having a bit of fun with you, Jack. Thanks for the answer.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
