I love sushi and can eat it everyday. I was wondering if I will be able to eat it again after I am banded?

I am still able to eat sushi, but only about a 1/4 of what I used to eat. I don't have any problem with it, but I have heard that the seawood paper can cause problems as it does not break right down when chewed.

You should have no problems. I occassionally can't do some rolls because of the rice, but everything else goes down fine & is a great source of protein!

Depends on if the rice is cooked the right way. When it is nice and firm, I have no problems. If it is too mushy, it gets stuck.

My surgeon recommended eating sushi because of the high Protein content.

I had sushi on Friday and I asked them to make me a roll without the rice. Also most places have soybean paper (if you ask for it) that they wrap rolls in instead of the seaweed. I'm sure they thought I was weird for ordering it that way (no rice) but who cares. It was so yummy too!

I just had sushi the other day. I asked them to cut the pieces in half for me when they made it. Salmon, tuna and Halibut. 2 pieces of each cut in half. I think there was a bite or 2 left. Had no issues with the rice. I have 5.5cc in my 14cc band and I feel pretty tight. I can eat most foods if I eat slow. If I tried to take a normal bite and swallow fast I get stuck on almost anything. Plus it was nice to order and only spend $6 instead of the $25 I used to spend when I got sushi. YUM.

Sushi is my favorite food. Sadly, I have slowly had to stop eating it. First I couldnt take the seaweed. Then a fill or two later I stopped being able to tolerate the sticky rice. Now, I can eat sashimi or tartar but it isn't as good if you chew it a lot! Everyone is different - maybe you will have a better experience.

I was able to eat two pieces okay, but when I went for a third it kind of slid to the back of my throat before I could chew it really good (slippery fish!), and it got stuck. It was my first real "bad" experience, the first time I slimed and vomited post banding, but it was my own fault. Just mentioning this to say be careful!!

I have had it and it is fine...even with the rice. I am not at full restriction though, so that may be why the rice was ok.

Eat and Enjoy!!

I too love sushi....I almost decided against the band so I could still eat it....at least I know I don't have to give it up!!:scared2:

This is really good to hear. I am 4 days post op and I was worried I would not be able to eat sushi. The amount I can eat does not really phase me, just being able to eat it in general would be nice.

I get all of my rolls wrapped in cucumber now instead of rice. Its lighter, more refreshing, more healthy and mostly, there are no worries about the rice getting stuck. This is the type of roll I eat: http://www.moonthai.com/dinnerimgs/Kanisu.jpg

You should see if the restaurant will do it for you, next time you go for sushi.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
