Measuring Your Food

Recommended Posts

It's before chewing. The half cup measure is volume. I use a digital scale because I can't measure a sandwich in volume. I measure each component. The digital scale is very small and sits in the bread box in the kitchen.

Hastings - So do you have any idea how much a 6 inch sandwich from subway would be in terms of weight??? How much food do you eat (weight) at each meal?

Jennifer if you go to Sparkpeople.com and sign up, (it's free), you can enter food and it will tell you the calories in each component. If you don't want to do that here is the link to subway's nutritional information. Click on the link to go the info.

Official SUBWAY Restaurants' Nutrition Information

I don't worry too much about amount I eat. I just make sure my calories are at 1200. I have to be a little careful about it because I'm a diabetic.

Thanks hastings,

I understand how to count calories, I just can't get a grasp on this whole 1/2 cup thing. It is easy to measure a 1/2 cup of Soup, but what about 1/2 cup of sandwich, 1/2 cup taco, or anything like that. Does anyone have any ideas??? I am not concerned with the calorie content of a sandwich, or the weight of a sandwich, but the volume of a sandwich?

Jennifer - I no longer eat sandwichs (say like a sub) any longer because bread can be an issue. And if you look at a subway sandwich...that's a LOT of bread. What I do & call a sandwich or taco..is measure out my deli meat or salad (egg/tuna/chicken/salmon) to 1/2 cup or 2/3 oz's & spread that on a Wasa bread Cracker. Now I know the "weight" measurement & the caloric intake of the wasa cracker (45calories/0fat/2protein). I do the same w/a taco when putting a wheat wrap (55calories/0fat/1protein) & add my cheese/lf sour cream/etc.

If your looking for the volume, order a 6inch subway minus the bread (comes in a salad version) and measure that. My guess that comes to close to 1 1/2 - 2cups of food, which is more than one should likely eat in one sitting / maybe best to split 2 meals with.

Do you measure 1/2 cup of food in terms of before chewed, or after chewed? For instance, how do you measure a sandwich in terms of volume. Does anyone have an estimate of how much (cup wise) a 6 inch sandwich from Subway would be??

____________________________________________________________

Before you chew...

6 inch sub to me would be 2 cups - cut it in half put each half in a measuring cup - too much bread for me - wasted calories - I couldn't eat that much bread

I do eat sandwiches but on WW or Saralee light bread - 1 sandwich on that type of bread would be better than on a subway roll and a lot less calories - I'm all about the calories 98% of the time.

I have a hard time figuring out the size of something when you cant physically stick it in a measuring cup ... so this is what I did... I have dry food measuring cups (ie: not the glass pyrex ones) and got one that is the 1cup size. I made a fist with my hand and shoved it into the measuring cup to see how much of my fist fits in the cup - and now I know if I am eating something that doesn't measure well I just make the fist and try to decide that way by comparison.

I would guess that a 6" is at LEAST 2 cups. It would be worth checking out Subways nutritional info as I know I was surprised to find out a 6" tuna sub (with cheese and mayo) was over 600 calories. You might as well eat a burger at that rate...

Hope the fist analogy helps!

Thank You everyone, for your responses.

Ang,

That is a great idea, I never thought of that. My Dr. told to imagine a glass, and I should not be eating more than 1/2 of that, but some foods are easier to picture as "half a glass" than others. My dad loves Subway and we go there at least once a week for lunch. Yesterday I had a 6 inch Turkey on toasted wheat, but I just kinda picked at the bread and ate the insides - but probably still more than the 1/2 cup I should be eating though.

"Where are you sweet restriction???"

Yah I always thought it makes more sense to "eat my fist" than "1/2 a glass of something" hehe. Because you can even hold your fist up next to whatever you are eating if you need lol.

Hang in there, the fight to restriction is a tough one but you can do it!

Hi Jennifer, I measure out the prepared food before I eat it. I try to stick to 1/2 cups servings. Lately it hasnt been easy. Good luck to everyone. Linda

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
