banded 1/30 - why am I hungry?

Recommended Posts

Hi Shortgal!!!

I think the point is this....... (and Nuff I hope you don't think I'm picking on you personally, I see comments like yours a lot on these boards so I am speaking in broad terms, but using your post as an example) ..... I don't think there is anything wrong with treating yourself to a "forbidden" food, i.e. one you wouldn't necessarily have on a regular basis, every now in then. In fact, my nutritionist says that there will be times when I WILL take detours along the way and that the important thing is to make sure to get back on track right away. My original point was that eating three rolls, two eclairs (and I forget the rest) to "Celebrate something" is not a good mindset and one that needs to change in order to be successful. That is precisely the kind of mindset that made us have to have surgery in the first place. Oh, I got a raise, let's go eat! I got engaged, let's go eat! food related rewards are counter productive to the bandster way of life. Treating yourself to a new outfit, a massage, manicure, jewelry or other luxury is much more beneficial. Even if you are celebrating something like a birthday, anniversary or other occassion, order a dessert and split it, have a SMALL piece of cake (if you can eat it) or a quarter cup of ice cream, eat it slowly and savor it. But three rolls, two eclairs and everything else? That's a recipe for disaster. Even six months down the road, I hope I am able to make good choices even when I am celebrating.

I hope we all make good choices later as well, I just know that I haven't hit the six month mark and don't want to judge too quickly until I'm there.

She did say she got right back on track the next day and don't we all know people that have been "normal" weight their whole life, that binge occassionally and then get back on track? That's what keeps them normal weight.

But yeah, if we let ourselves get too carried away, we could easily go right back where we came from. If we want this weight to stay off permanately, we really need to make better choices, long term.

Even at the six month mark, we'll still be new at this new tool and the new requirements it takes.

And trust me, when I read the post I was thinking the EXACT same thing. I hope I have the same comittment three months from now, that I currently have at three months out.

I just wanted to say that the newly banded, might not be the best ones to judge her admitted mistake.

Have you had your first fill yet? I had surgery 2/4 and had clear fluids the first 2 days, followed by full fluids for a week. I then got to eat soft food for a couple of days and now eat everything.

WHAT! How unfair! I was banded on 2/4 too, but I'm on liquids for 4 weeks and then pureed for two! Today is the first day I'm hungary...but oh how niced it would be to be back on regular foods!

I was banded 12th feb. I am on "anything that will go through a straw" for 2 weeks. Then pureed food for 2 weeks then carefully try solids. So many different ideas from different docs.

I contacted the 24hr nurse about going onto pureed food early as I am having no trouble with thick Soup (no lumps or bits). She said no because if it makes me sick at this early stage damage could be done to the band location.

I am coping well with the diet itself, but not with the lack of calories and am weak and dizzy. I said this to the nurse and from the very beginning of the process she was the first to say dont worry about callories at this stage just concentrate on recovering and healing. I have upped my intake to 1100 per day and feel much better. I was on 800 just because I can do it now but it was not enough to keep me upright. (6' male).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
