First Stuck/Slime/PB Episode

Recommended Posts

Thanks HeatherA ~ I called Dr. Tuesday and he fit me in right away. He wasn't too happy that I waited 4 days before calling him. He took out 1.3 cc and said Clear Liquids for 2 days. From now on I promised I'd call him after 2 PB/slime attacks. Anyway ~ I did lose 4 lbs in 4 days ~ I hope they stay off! I am feeling so much better now ~ I successfully ate first mushy last night and my shake this morning. Another lesson learned...

I have been so lucky while I have been away from home this past 2 weeks. My dad likes to eat out every single night. I was really afraid I would be running to the rest rooms all the time. I have made good choices, chewed well, and haven't gotten stuck once since I have been

here. It's a true miracle.

Yea, once you find a food that gives you trouble, it's hard to want to even try it again.

I wish cake gave me problems. Junk food goes down the easiet, unfortunately. It's meat that I have to cut into itty bitty pieces and chew until there is nothing left to chew. I HATE it when food gets stuck, so I have been extremely careful after my last episode with steak. It was stuck for hours and wouldn't come up or go down. I tried the papaya tablets and sipped pineapple juice, and threw those up too.

Now cake, goes down like I have no band. It's not fair, really.

Ayi! I feel light cramp, I was enjoying chicken with broccoli and wham! it got stuck. I walked around the house for a few mins., went to the bathroom and spit up all this slim, small piece of broccoli came up. the pain is HELL!

it didn't last long, maybe 5 mins. during lunch I sort of felt the same way with salmon and salad, it made it through so no crisis

I'm 5 days out from my first fill of 2cc. I will play this out and concentrate on my chewing, but if it happens again I will get a slight unfill. I don't want to have to worry about this again. buh humbug

Your fill could loosen on it's own. Just make sure you cut your bites into eraser size bites. Chew until there is nothing left to chew. Wait in between bites. If you do these things, and still have trouble, you're right, you need an unfill. Usually, doing these things will work until the fill loosens on it's own. As you lose fat around your stomach, the band gets looser.

If you're close to your doctor, and don't have to pay for fills and unfills,

that usually makes a difference too.

I had my first fill 1/29 and I felt like I couldn't eat much or things wouldn't go down. I went back to the Dr. on Feb. 11th concerned that after my first fill that I was too tight. I thought he had told me he put in 5 c.c.! I must have been nervous and not listening as he was actually doing the fill! When I went back on the 11th he told me he only put in 2 c.c and that as I lost weight the band would loosen up and things would go down easier, as the fat around the band shrinks in that area. He was willing to take some out but I listened to him about how the band changes and decided to stick it out and not take any out.

My personal experience was the first couple days after my first fill, there was some difference in the amount I was eating. After the 3rd day out from the fill, I felt much more restricted and those feelings of things getting stuck hung around for about 3 weeks after my fill on the 29th. After mid-Feb. I could eat more and the feelings of things getting stuck are much more rare now and I'm feeling like I'm ready for another fill now! I'm concerned about how much I can eat and the weight is really slow at coming off now, even though I'm exercising at the gym 4 to 5 times a week... It's disappointing to work out so much and I'm not eating near as much as I used to and things have slowed to a turtle pace... :scared2:

I have an appt. on Wed. to have another fill! I'm actually looking forward to it so the weight loss goes back into high gear again... I'm hoping the "stuck" feeling won't get any worse then what it felt like after the first fill... I'm going to be careful about chewing too and just plan on eating much less now that I have the first fill experience behind me... Does anyone feel that the "stuck" feelings get worse with each fill or about the same???

It's great to hear from everyone. I learn so much and don't feel like what I'm going through isn't typical! Good luck to everyone and hang in there!!! :cursing:

As you get more fills, your band is tighter. You might find a food that was easy for you to eat is not so easy anymore. You might get stuck on something that never gave you any problems before.

You're right though. As you lose weight, you also lose some fat around your stomach, which makes the band looser again. Then those foods that were giving you problems, might be easier again.

Just remember after a fill to be careful. Take tiny bites and chew until there is nothing left to chew.

I'm feeling a little better after my first fill, no a lot better. I have no hunger during the day, today I had a Protein Drink, boiled egg and Water. when I got home I had a cup of clam chowder. OK now check this out. my hubby is eating a flour tortilla with butter, mmmmmmmmm smells delis. and what happens I eat one, a whole tortilla. I chewed that baby to nothing. I don't think thats a good thing. I need to toss those suckers

out the door

another thing I noticed is during the day, I have excess saliva, its not a lot and I did not need to excuse myself to the ladies room and I guess sipping water flush it down (gross). This also happened to me on Saturday, I went shopping and was having to spit in a napkin the whole time. after we stopped to eat, it went away.

This finicky band, I will learn to control it!

Didn't your doctor tell you to stay on liquids for at least 24 hours after a fill.

That saliva you're talking about is what we refer to as slime. It can get out of control and be a real problem when you're eating with someone who doesn't know about the band. When I was in Arizona visiting my dad, I had to spit on the floor. I know , too much information:unsure:

Well, I've finally had my first (second, and third) sliming episodes. I've never been restricted and was getting quite lax on the chew, chew, chew routine. I could basically eat like pre-surgery. So when I got this fill I wasn't as careful as I should have been and it's been tough lessons learned.

The first slime episode - too much food at once.

The second slime episode - didn't quite chew the last bite enough

The third - swallowed just a tad too much without waiting long enough between bites.

So I'm learning, and next time I'm going to follow the rules - tiny bites, chew, chew, chew, swallow and wait. I now understand why it will take me 45 minutes to finish 1/4 cup meal of food. I couldn't understand that before.

I wish I had this restriction right after surgery when I was following these "rules" because now I'm having to relearn these lapband habits all over again.

That is the problem I have I have just gotten lax in the chewing and worrying about how big of a bite I take.

Well idiot me started out the morning with getting stuck on my egg and cheese omlette . . . AGAIN (I don't learn well) . . . . after 3 bites. Well fine . . . I get home . . . and take my almost 3 year old granddaughter to the zoo . . . and DUH ME . . . forgot all about the morning . . . and ordered some carnitas (pulled pork) by itself when I got her a kids meal . . . and after 2 bites I'm going "oh crap" . . . have no clue where the bathroom is from where I am . . . have my granddaughter . . . so I'm pointing to the elephants (how appropriate) and telling her to look there . . . while I'm turning around into the bushes . . . ughhhhh . . . ok . . .I'm on liquids . . . I REMEMBER now!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
