Port bruising problem - flipping?

Recommended Posts

I work on a mine site and am required to wear the uniforms supplied. The trousers are very heavy duty denim, with no give in the material and no elastic in the waistband. The waistline sits exactly on top of my port, which is situated dead centre, a few inches above my belly button. Because I've lost a little weight, when I stand up, the trousers are falling off me, but when I sit down, they are still quite tight, especially at the waistline.

They dig into me quite a lot during the day and I often have to undo the top button or shift the waist band to sit above or below my port. I have noticed at the end of the day, I often have faint blue bruising beneath the incision scar and occasionally feel sharp little tugs inside, as though it was pulling on stitches. I am now 7 weeks post op, and before I returned to work (at 4 weeks post op), all my port pain had gone completely. Now it bothers me, not a huge amount, but enough to be aware of it constantly.

I am worried that this constant pressure will cause the stitches holding the port in place to tear, eventually leading to my port flipping or moving. I mentioned this to my doctor at my last visit, which was for my first fill, after a 1 week shift back on site. He didn't seem worried at all, put it down to continuing post-op recovery, and pretty much dismissed my questions. However, given that I am now so far post-op and the problem still hasn't gone away, should I be bringing it up with him again, or am I getting worried over nothing? Does anyone know if it is this kind of pressure that leads to ports flipping?

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can work around this problem? At the moment, my pants are way too loose when I stand up, so if I got a bigger size they would literally fall off. I can forsee the problem still occurring as I go down in sizes too, as it is an inherent problem with the cut and material they use.

PS: I'm kind of worried that it might have started to flip already. Once, when I stood up in an awkward way, I felt it pulling inside quite a lot. When I pressed on the port location from the outside, it felt like I was feeling the edge of the port, as though it had turned sideways. I very gently massaged the area until it went down again and that hasn't happened since, but it scared me quite a lot!

As for the pants, maybe you can cut and sow some elastic pieces into the waistband to give you more room when you sit?

Regarding the port flipping...have you had a fill yet? If they try to access the port and can't then you will know if the port flipped or tilted. Then they should put you under an xray to confirm that it has flipped. If it's only tilted (many do get tilted) then they should be able to manually manipulate it back into place.

I would definitely bring it up with your dr again.

Good luck!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
