Blood Donation

Recommended Posts

I like to donate blood. I realize that I won't be able to do this for a while after the surgery, but I am hoping that I will be able to resume donating blood a year or two out, does anyone know anything about this?

I didn't realise there were any limitations on donating blood after lapband surgery.

I think there's a period of a few months after any type of surgery that you can't donate blood. I was blood donor before being banded and after the surgery I've already donated a few times, no problem at all.

I like to donate blood, but since surgery my red cell count has been low (just the teeny tiniest bit below "normal"). I need to take Iron, but I'm horrible at daily supplements.< /p>

this is good to know. I'm two months post op and a friend of mine has cancer and needs regular transfusions. Her insurance doesn't pay for blood products. I've given in her name just so it won't be so expensive for her. I haven't since banding and was a little concerned. I guess I will resume helping her out.

Thanks for your answers, the blood donation people did not think I would be able to donate again after the surgery. They were not sure, they were just worried about someone getting enough liquids in.

I am on call for Blood donation and donated just 2 days ago, one month after surgery. I was told that the incisions had to be healed with no oozing.

Hmmmm.....I thought you had to wait a year after surgery to donate? Wow. I waited a year, but have donated both blood and platelets since.

Guess you gotta ask the Blood Services in your area.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
