post op nausea and meds

Recommended Posts

I am 4 days post op and having a pretty rough time of it. Not hungry but just a lot of nausea and some dry heaves the 1st 2 days but none since. I am still having lots of abdominal and gas pains. But my real problem is trying to get down any medications. I am on Clear Liquids and following that religiously. The liquid lortab is terrible tasting and I start heaving when taking small amounts with sips of Water. I ended up splitting a Zofran (for nausea) in half and its a really small pill and then taking a small spoon of jelly and mixing it and it went down. Its not SF jelly but I'm not getting in much calories anyway. I may try the same thing tonight with pain pill tablets to get them down. Anyone having similar problems. I am feeling like I made a huge mistake now having the surgery. HELP

Teanne,

I'm sorry to hear that you are having such problems. That liquid lortab is VILE! I don't know how much pain you are in, but I switched to liquid tylenol postop day 2 and it worked just fine and it tastes way better than the lortab. You should call your surgeon and tell him about the nausea. Mine gave me phenergan suppositories. Thankfully I didn't need them, but at least you don't have to try to swallow them and it sounds like you need something. Hope you get to feeling better.

Teanne, I would definitely do what was suggested and call your doctor to get some suppositories for the nausea. You don't want to heave like that with the new band. The more you heave, the more you are going to irritate your new pouch and the swelling won't go down which is probably what is causing your nausea in the first place. Don't worry, I know it's rough now but in a few days it will seem like a distant memory.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
