OMG I cheated on my OPTIFAST. Will I be ok still?

Recommended Posts

Ok.. I know I am a bad girl. I took my daughter and her 2 little girlfriends to McDonalds tonight. I ate like 8 fries and 1/2 a chicken nugget. Now I am worried my doctor will be able to tell that I cheated. I have my blood work in the morning, is there anything I can do? Surgery is scheduled for 2/5.

Three nights before my surgery I went out for mexican food and totally blew my preop diet. Got right back to it the next morning. The surgeon told my husband that I did a great job on the preop diet and my liver was just right, he had plenty of room. I wouldn't worry about it too much. What kind of bloodwork? I can't think of any bloodwork that a 1/2 of a chicken nugget and 8 fries would make much of an impression on.

I know I am probably over reacting, but my doc said he could tell if I cheated in my pre-op blood work and if I didn't follow the diet he would cancel the surgery. I am sure what I ate didn't do much, and I have lost 7 lbs in 6 days, but I still worry. Only 5 days to my new life.

Thank you for responding, I do feel a little better.

Part of the bloodwork might be LFT test, which is liver function test. an elevated level could indicate a fatty liver.

If you have been following the diet carefully and that was a small slip up, you should be fine! Good luck on your surgery.

HELLO, I HAD MY SURGEY ON JAN 3 2008. I DIDNT EVEN DO A PRE OP DIET. ALL I HAD TO DO WAS NOT EAT THE NIGHT BEFORE THE SURGERY. THE DOCTOR WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TELL. NOT TO SAY THAT THE PRE OP DIET IS NOT NECESSARY, BUT I MADE A QUICK DECISION TO GET BANDED AND NOW I HAVE LOST 18 LBS IN A MONTH. DONT WORRY ABOUT THE FRIES.....EAT MORE IF YOU WANT AND NOTHING WILL HAPPEN. I GAINED 4 POUNDS THE WEEK BEFORE MY OPERATION FROM MY FAIRWELL MASSIVE EATING. BUT NOW, IM A NEW MAN WITH NEW DEVELOPING HABITS AND LOTS OF MOTIVATION. GOOD LUCK , AND DONT SWEAT IT.

Hi all.. Thank you for making me feel better about my cheating.. It's so hard knowing you HAVE to be good after surgery that I thought one cheat on the pre-op diet wouldn't hurt. But I am seeing more and more that most people have cheated once or twice.. I will be good from now on till surgey this Tuesday.. Thank you all again.

That's the right attitude. Picking yourself up after a small mis step and getting right back on track will serve you well post op. If we don't let our little mistakes turn into big ones, we'll keep the weight off!

The pre-op diet is to shrink your liver, which sits right next to the stomach. If it is swollen, it can be cut and you can hemmorrhage. A surgeon who doesn't put their patients on a pre-op diet to reduce this risk better have excellent malpractice insurance. I would not trust them to put a band aid on my blister.

I had my surgery Wednesday and feel pretty darn good. Just came on to find some tips about lose BM, which is certainly expected living on liquids for over 2 weeks.

I'm feeling guilty because I ate a chef salad! It was only about a cup worth and I used the spritzer for the dressing.

Amazing what we'll beat ourselves up over.

I am so relieved to read this thread - I had Hot and Sour Soup the other day instead of the Optifast chicken broth, and I considered calling the surgeon's office to confess. I didn't call...Instead, I kept on the plan and haven't cheated since.

But now, I admit I'm tempted to have one last treat before surgery on Monday....like something with bread......but I'll try my best to refrain!

LOL.. yes refrain... you are so close.. but if you must have one more hoorah then do like a piece of chicken or an egg. All Protein, not bread... Good luck on Monday with your surgery, mine is Tuesday. Yeah...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
