question about restriction and chewing - help appreciated

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'd like to know if chewing your food to a mush affects your restriction - what I mean is - if your food is really well chewed - does it go right through the band or sit behind it? or do you have to part chew but not to a complete pulp for it to sit behind the band?

I'm hoping to get real restriction after my next fill on Monday and am trying to get my head round how it all works/what's best to do - chewing wise. It's been 14 months now without restriction and I feel like I have to learn how to eat all over again.

Thanks for reading

Yvonne

Everyone is different, but personally, I have to chew to a mush to get it to work properly. If I don't chew to mush, then it gets stuck and I might potentially PB.

Everyone can be different. Each time I get a fill, I progress very slowly. After a fill, my Dr. requires two days of full liquids, followed by two days of soft food. This is becasue sometimes the fill can irritate the stomach and it gives it time to adjust.

Then I slowly, gradually and carefully try other foods to see what goes down and how much I have to chew it etc. I take very small bites.

So I approach it exactly as you described, like learning to eat all over again. The fear of getting a food stuck works in a positive way for me, as the fear keeps me from overeating and I don't attempt to try foods that many people have trouble with like bread.< /p>

You and your new pouch will discover which foods are ok and which aren't.

Good Luck on your next fill and the continuation of your weight loss.

My next (fourth) fill is tomorrow. Hoping I get restriction, too!

I think I just figured out the answer to this question the other morning. Im 8 months out and keep telling my Dr that I dont think I have the restriction that I should at this point, especially since I have 10.25 cc in my band. Nothing had ever got stuck or caused me any problems until the other morning when I plopped two left over tater tots in my mouth and inhaled them without ever thinking about it. Minutes later I felt this pressure in my throat and chest that I had never felt before. It felt like I had just swallowed a golf ball. Just like other people have described. A couple of minutes later, I hacked up a bunch of slime. Ironically I couldnt have been happier. This was the first time that my band had ever made its self known. So to answer your question I do think that how well you chew or dont chew affects your restriction. Normally Im very careful about chewing my food, but this one time when I wasnt I finally got something stuck. So now Im trying to find the right amount of chewing to get the food thru without being stuck but at the same time not so much that it goes straight thru. I mean if you think about it it makes a lot of sense. At least I think so. :rolleyes2:

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
