Lap-Banding and PCOS?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys!

My name is Michelle and I'm 27, currently residing in Scotland.

I've battled for years with my weight, even when I was 11 years old I was on a diet. Then I got diagnosed with PCOS when I was 19 and the struggle has pretty much gone on from there:frown:.

I've tried every diet known to man. GI Diet, Atkins, Slimfast, Weight Watchers etc. and nothing works. It works for a a few weeks then plateaues(sp?) before I end up putting back on what I've lost and another couple of pounds just for good measure(!)

I'm thinking about going to Lap-Banding, but just wondered if anyone here has PCOS and has had the lap-banding done. Have you seen any success with it at all?

Thanks for reading guys

Michelle-

I have PCOS too, I was diagnosed about 2 years ago. My dr. tells me to lose weight as this will help or maybe cure my PCOS symptoms and the disease all together. I haven't started the Lap Band approval process, but am hoping I will get approved. Sorry I don't have any advice for you, I wanted to let you know that you aren't alone in your struggle.

Michelle

I was diagnosed with PCOS about 7 years ago. I was banded 9-20-07 and have lost 65lbs so far. This is the only thing that has ever worked for me. I've lost weight on diets before and ended up gaining it all back plus some. This tool is designed to help us keep the weight off for good! For me, this experience has changed my relationship with food. The thought of food doesn't consume me anymore. There's always going to be good days and bad, but the difference is........ it's so much easier to pick myself up and start again.

I wish you the best of luck in whatever decision you make!

I was banded in July 07 and Im down 62 lbs , I have had PCOS for as long as I can remember. My periods are back ( something i could live with out LOL ) and so far so good on the weight loss. Like Georgia Girl its the only thing I have been able to loose weight on .

There is a HUGE thread on PCOS and the band you might want to read.

I too have had PCOS forever it seems. I was banded Oct 24 and have lost 40 pounds. The band is the best decision that I have ever made. I am having periods again as well. For the first time in about 15 years, I have hope of being healthy and in good physical shape again. I can actually picture myself thin again. WOW!!!

The only reason i dont want my periods is i get horrible Migraines with them . I have been use to getting ( inducing) them 3 times a yr for over 10 yrs. I have chronic migraines and my menstral migraines are HORRIBLE . So i could live without them coming back LOL

PCOS is Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrom - its hormonally based and the 3 main symptoms are lack of periods (or none), tendency to put on excess weight and keep it on and excess body hair.

I had all 3 symptoms when I was diagnosed at 22. I'm now 40. PCOS cannot be 'cured' and anyone who tells you that, I would question their qualifications. Its something you will have for life. However, by getting weight back into balance, you can put it into remission and its as though you never had it. Put all the weight back on, and the symptoms will all come back.

I haven't been banded yet, can't do that til November this year, but I'm going to. I've come to the conclusion that some kind of bariatric surgery is the only way I'm going to lose weight.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
