bambam31 168 Posted May 13, 2010 I have a few questions for some of you....Did anyone get the band prior to attending their respective academy? Or, was everyone on the job when they had their procedure? I was already on the job 14yrs. And after nearly two years with the band I'm thankful everyday that I went through with it! :smile2: Brad
APD209 2 Posted February 19, 2016 Any law enforcement officer that work the street on here that had the sleeve? Sent from my iPhone using BariatricPal
Big Guy 77 11 Posted February 21, 2016 I'm OTJ almost 18 years, post-sleeve 1 year. Not currently on patrol but I am full duty. Can I help?
APD209 2 Posted February 21, 2016 I was just curious about recovery time to get back to full duty. Sent from my iPhone using BariatricPal
Big Guy 77 11 Posted February 21, 2016 I was just curious about recovery time to get back to full duty. Sent from my iPhone using BariatricPal I went back full duty after 6 weeks. My job is unique in that we perform police, fire and EMS/first responder. I currently work on the fire side so my surgeon gave me some extra time to heal. Had I been on the patrol side, I probably would have gone back at 4 weeks. I have heard of people (social networking) who were back on patrol at 2 weeks post-op, which I did feel well enough to go back to work; but that being said if I had to roll around with someone or stretch a handline I might have caused some type of complication. I'd say plan on a month out.
APD209 2 Posted February 21, 2016 Thank you very much for your reply. Were you happy with the results of the surgery? And problems with feeling weak on the job? Sent from my iPhone using BariatricPal
Big Guy 77 11 Posted February 21, 2016 Having the surgery was the single best thing I've ever done for myself. If anything I feel stronger, back to the early days. Working out and positive attitude help. Keep in mind though it's not a silver bullet. I look at it as hitting a reset button, giving you a chance to do things over the right way. You still have to make healthy choices and exercise. It gets harder to stay focused when the weight loss stops or you're in an extended stall. Just keep focus on your "why" you're doing this. OKCPirate 5,323 Posted February 21, 2016 If I was on the street, I'd want a month minimum for the stomach to heal. Can you get admin duties for a short period of time. I would not have wanted to be in an altercation the first month. You have to watch internal stresses from lifting too much weight.
APD209 2 Posted February 21, 2016 Thank you @@Big Guy 77! @@OKCPirate, I can get time off as well as admin duty if needed. I guess I will have to see how it goes. Thank you again. Sent from my iPhone using BariatricPal
LVMSfireman 6 Posted February 24, 2016 I understand this is a law enforcement forum, but are there any firefighters or MET's (or officers for that matter) who had the sleeve done? I am and I was wondering about the after effects and working out. In our line of work we need to be extremely physically fit (strength and cardio wise). Has or is anyone having problems? Any advice or anything at all i should know or yall can tell me?
LVMSfireman 6 Posted February 24, 2016 @@Big Guy 77 I am less than 24 hours from my surgery. How is it getting back into the gym and staying in shape to be able to do the job? i am currently a volunteer firefighter with dreams of being a career firefighter soon! Were you able to get the intake you needed to be in firefighter shape?
OKCPirate 5,323 Posted February 24, 2016 How old are you? Four weeks minimum for stomach to heal in order to begin to start up on exercise stress again. It took me three months before I was up to pushing myself to where I was before surgery
LVMSfireman 6 Posted February 26, 2016 I'm 28. One day post op now! I'm just hoping to be able to have enough strength to workout the way we need to in our profession
Big Guy 77 11 Posted March 1, 2016 (edited) Hi. Sorry I've been off the website. You need a solid month minimum I'd say. I'd rather do the 6 weeks. When I first came back after surgery I had to stretch and work an 1-3/4 handline. No problems during but I felt cramps for a few hours after. Yes, you'll be able to work out at the intensity that you should/need to. It just takes some time. No worries.
