I'm Scared Now!

Recommended Posts

Gosh! After reading some of the posts on this site with complications, I'm almost scared now to have banding done. OMG, I mean people getting dehydrated, vomiting, having to be hospitalized, etc. Am I just making something out of nothing or what? Please someone let me know if I need to worry so much. Before reading all of this, really the biggest thing I was afraid of was being put under anesthesia because I do get VERY SICK after being put to sleep for surgery, but hopefully we can avoid that problem from the get go! PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME TRY & FIGURE THIS OUT!

Thanks!

Hey Heidi - Like you, I have not been banded yet. I watch the Complications posts and I have been making a questions lists for my surgeon. I am in the middle of insurance approval. Once I get past that and meet with my surgeon again, I will be asking these questions of my surgeon and his staff.

To calm my fears, I also look at how many people here have had successful LBs. I think the rate of success is pretty good and the odds are in our favor. But I also feel for the folks here you have had bad experiences. There is real heartbreak in their posts sometimes. But I would rather be informed.

Hope that helps some.

Hello Heidisue!

Being scared before surgery and questioning your decision is normal. This is a huge decision to make and it shouldn't be taken lightly. I, too, was scared to take the leap at first and actually postponed my surgery. Now I can't imagine not having had it.

The truth of the matter is that MOST people do not have complications. You don't always hear those stories, though. I happen to know a lot of banded people (some from this forum) that don't post unless they have a problem or a question. People don't normally go looking for forums like this unless they have a problem they need assistance with or they are looking for information.

It has been eight months since I had my lap band surgery. I have never once had a PB, vomited, or been dehydrated. If you learn your body signals and follow your doctors instructions, it's less likely any of these will happen. Other complications are out of your hands, but they are rare.

Good luck to you.

hi heidisue

tell them you get sick after an anaesthetic.. i did and they gave me something and i was fine!

complications happen, but not to the majority of people. i'm having problems, but i know they will eventually subside.

you'll probably have a good run with no problems. try to remain positive and stop reading about complications if it's upsetting you. you dont need to go in with a negative mindset. go in feeling positive that it's going to be a-ok.

Hey there! Do yourself a favor and STOP reading the complication part of this board! Please don't get me wrong it's a great place to ask questions and what not if you are having problems but well you are waitng to be band this stuff sure can scare you! (Ok I read it all too before being band) When getting second thoughts about surgery I had to remind myself that ALL surgeries have risk. BUT what if in the future I needed emergency surgery, open heart surgery, ANY surgery and I did not get this weight off? I think THAT would be more of a risk. I would rather have a surgeon and anesthesiologist who dealt with "heavy" people <now> then remain heavy and have an emergency. This was my "pep" talk I gave myself when I was getting cold feet! I am so very glad I got my band! Good-Luck to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
