Every surgeon seems to be different, some require a recent sleep study, some an EKG, some require a psych evaluation (that's mostly an insurance requirement). Some wand to do an upper GI, it is impossible to tell you what you absolutely will have to have.

I had some other issues in the year prior to my banding, so I had EKG's and lab work and the surgeon accepted those. I did still have to have lab work down right before the surgery, though (electrolytes, blood count, blood type, etc).

My surgeon did not require an upper GI, nor a sleep study, nor anything like that.

Lovingheart:

I didn't do any of the testing until I went to my surgeon. I had to have the usual blood work, an ekg, sleep apnea study, barium swallow, and a psych evaluation. Everything except the psych evaluation was covered by insurance for me.

nutritionist, psch, med records for the last 5 years.

Monday I go in for ekg, x-ray, blood work, abdominal ultrasound and upper GI.

All this has to be done before I see the surgeon. I just got my ins approval last week.

I had bloodwork, cardiology (with a stress test and echocardiogram) upper GI series, nutritionist, psychologist and sleep study. I had them done all after my first visit with Dr. Tischler on 12/27 and was done with the testing by 01/18/08. I'm now waiting for things to be sent to the insurance company.

Psych eval and the nutritionist were not covered by my insurance. My surgeon wanted me to have a IVC filter placed in . My surgeon was very, very thorough, and I am very grateful now for this. I had to meet with the psychologist and nutritionist. I had to have an EKG, Pulminary Fitness Test, and chest X-ray, as well as several blood tests. That was it and I was able to get all the tests done at my GP's office.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
