Hello, This may be a silly question. But are you still able to gulp Water and other fluids?? I am almost 2 weeks post-op and while I did sip slowly for the first few days, I have found myself drinking large sips at once. I'm pretty sure I could drink 120z straight down shotgun style if I tried....Is this the norm?? and if so why was my Dr. so insistent of slow sipping??

Remember....you have no restriction at this point. The sipping is to get you in practice to eat slow when you do have restriction. I can gulp Water too. I've only had one fill (3 CCs) and I can still gulp. I try not to, but when I'm thirsty.... forget it. Keep trying to sip. It will be helpful if it's a good habit when you do have restriction.

Thanks for the question and response. I was wondering the same thing. I kept reading about sipping slowly and I have been, but a couple of times when I was really thirsty I took regular drinks and was fine, so then I thought, what if something is wrong:ohmy:...glad to know I'm okay:biggrin:

I now have 7cc in my 10cc band. I can no longer gulp. Well, I can, but it will come right back up. This has been very hard for me. I am definately a gulper.

I am so glad that you asked this question. I am 10 days post-op and i am soooo thirsty. I have just been sipping, but I feel like I could down a bottle of Water without taking a breath.

I could gulp until my last fill (3rd fill ) after that I could not. Now I can gulp again since I need another fill .

Shortly after surgery I did not even try to gulp I had no desire to try it .

But As time went on i discovered I could gulp.

HTH

The stomach/and newly formed pouch has been through a lot with the surgery, and is still swollen and tender. Treat yourself gently. There's a reason why we given directions.

Starting wgt. 225 1-07

Surgery wgt. 203 6-07

Current wgt. 150

Your surgery swelling is going down so you do not have much restriction - remember you haven't had a fill yet so you are pretty much like before surgery. When you have a lot of restriction you have to be more careful how much you drink in one gulp. My doctor did tell me that you should always be able to drink a pretty good sized gulp of Water - water is the very thinnest thing to go through your band so if you have trouble getting water down you are too tight. Anyway, eventually you are going to have more restriction so it is good to kind of practice taking smaller sips to get in the habit. Don't stress about it, if you take a big gulp unrestricted, no harm!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
