Gastric Bypass people I know eating crow now...

Recommended Posts

I know a few people that got gastric bypass and tried desperatly to get me to do that...even my doctor. I said hell no...they arnt rearranging my body!! I want to eat what I want and if it comes off slow...so be it. They would spout off about the quick weight loss...I know this person...I know that person...blah blah blah. Now the two people I know who had gastric bypass surgery this summer close to me are struggling to not eat so much. Now they see me and another freind and keep saying they wish they got the band. I feel bad for them but I tried to tell them I have seen too many people stretch it back out and that were fat again. I LOVE the option of getting a fill when I need it. And I really love the fact that my body works the same as it did before surgery:wink2:

My DH had gastric bypass and he can eat a ton, not gain BUT he has osteoporosis and has to watch his Vitamin intake very carefully. He is no longer diabetic, which is fantastic, but the malabsorption disease will always be with him.

I love my band, I know it is the healthier way to go.

I know a lot of gastric bypass people who have lost their weight and kept it off. I suspect it's just like the band - YOU ultimately have control of what you put into your mouth.

The emergency surgery I had was basically a stapled stomach w/o the staples (they removed the part that was dead) but instead of the standard shutting down of 85% when it's done for WLS, mine was only 50%. I have been able to eat SO much more than when I was banded :)

She still looks good but is a little chubbier now. I think gastric bypass is too extreme. It takes really fat people and deflates them to quickly, leaving lots of skin. Then a lot of people gain the weight back after. I think the lap band is healthier because there is no cutting of your stomach, you can take it out if you have a problem, and the fill thing keeps your stomach small so its harder to regain the weight. Also, I think its healthier to lose weight gradually instead of getting skinny overnight. Its not instant gratification but I think it's safer and better.

People have choices. There are stories of both gastric bypass and lap banded people failing to lose substantial weight. On the other hand there are many stories of great weight loss by people going with either procedure.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
