Hubby lost job & insurance... :( :(

Recommended Posts

I finally was able to start my road to be a bander and my husband was fired on Tuesday. He got hired at another place right away the next day. Oddly enough they also have Aetna, but he won't qualify for the insurance for 90 days.:(

We find out how much Cobra will be next week....I'm sure it'll be too much.

Oh well, I guess I'll have to start all over in 90 days.

that's a bummer. Look for the silver lining if you can. Maybe he'll like the new job better?

Sorry.

COBRA would still be cheaper than you thinking to finance the surgery yourself. I always believe in taking COBRA, because God forbid you need medical attention and don't take it. Hopefully it won't be too high for you.

Good luck.

Absolutely take the COBRA if you can, AND please continue to go to your monthly MD appointments. Even without COBRA, a monthly office visit with you PCP can't be more than $85-100. For three months that would be less than $300. Do not think you have to start all over!

No reason if the insurance is still Aetna that you wouldn't be able to use the monthly visits you are already working on!

Also, please make get your DH to get with his new employer's HR and find out more specifics about his new company's Aetna plan, then call Aetna YOURSELF and ask if the new plan you will have also covers adjustable gastric banding. It is possible that his new employer may have an exclusion to their policy for bariatric surgery.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
