What counts towards water intake?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone:

I was banded on Jan. 17 and I read that I have to have 64 ounces of liquid per day. Do I count the amount of Water I use in my Protein Shakes towards the 64 ounces? I am having a hard time fitting in my Protein shakes plus 64 ounces. Thanks for anyone's help.

Wow. I had my banding on Jan. 17 as well. But I am still feeling so full that I am doing good to drink a 20 oz bottle of Water a day and maybe fit in a sf popsicle or a little Jello. I do not know how I could get down 64 oz at this point,BUt I sure am thirsty enough that I would like to try.

I would count the shakes. I met Dr. Michael Roizen (the other half of the Dr. Oz duo) and asked him specifically about Water. He said anything with 15 calories or less per serving could count as water. I drink a lot of SF iced tea, FUZE (the low carb varieties), Crystal Lite, coffee...stuff like that.

Everything I've ever read says that any liquid that doesn't have caffiene in it can be counted against your intake. Examples- Sprite (I know its a no-no due to carbonation, just trying to give examples), decaffinated tea, broths, and so on. Anything that you drink with caffiene in it works against your 64 oz for the day because caffiene is a diuretic.

I was told anything non-carbonated, and sugar free or diet drinks ONLY count toward Water intake. That would be Iced tea, Crystal Lite drinks, sugar free Koolaid, water...things like that. I don't know the rules for the Protein Drinks but I would ask your doctor.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
