Getting ducks lined up......

Recommended Posts

Well I have my psych eval on Thursday the 24th that the bariatric surgeon requires. Now my insurance company doesnt require this stuff..but I just was able to make an appt to get in to talk to my PCP about seeing if he would recommend the surgery as well. I also called my ob/gyn that diagnosis me with PCOS and Insulin resistance to write a letter also. So I'm covering all my basis before I send this in to the bariatric surgeon along with my packet they want me to fill out about my medical history etc to get a consult. I'm making sure there wont be any question of me getting this surgery. That way the insurance company has no problems seeing that I have issues and need this surgery.

My PCP has seen me more times than I can count about having chronic bronchitis and just being sick all the time and my asthma getting worse. I am also quitting smoking...I'm down to 4 cigs a day. Mostly at work and on the drive home. Of course you realize with quitting smoking I'm gonna gain more weight...which will also help with the surgery not that I really need any with being over 250 now and only 5'5!

So whatcha think..have I missed anything that might be required?? My insurance co and the surgeon dont require the 6 month weight loss program...just lots of diet history with the packet you send in. Is there anything else that I havent thought of yet? :rolleyes2:

What are the requirements for your insurance? Mine only required that my BMI be 40 or higher, and 2 co-morbidities.

Glad to see you've got the ball rolling!

Well 40 BMI which is no problem...my bmi is 41.6

and I have PCOS with Insulin resistance....but other than what Dr. Steward requires my insurance just says 40 bmi or over. I have Anthem BC/BS of VA but I live here in KS....hubby gets insurance through working on post through a contractor as a mechanic and that is who they go through for insurance.

nope....gotta wait til I have everything I need to send the packet in..so they will call me for a consult...I hope they do it fast...do you think since I will have the psych eval and everything else in with the packet that they will send it in for insurance before the consult...or do they need to do the consult before sending to insurance?

I have BC/BS PPO in California. Once you get all your consults in, you also have to get "medical clearance". Mine came from the endocronoligist that works with my surgeon. Sometimes they can make you go thru additional testing before giving you clearance. Once you get that, the coordinator from the surgeons office will submit everything to insurance. Mine only took 2 days to approve!! Good luck. Sounds like you're keeping pace with everything!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
