Spice me UP!

Recommended Posts

I would love some feed back on this just because I think its interesting .... I have a support group that I go to each month and I have noticed one topic keeps coming up... spicy food and how much the banders in my group crave Hot spicy foods ... one women has developed a love for balsamic vinager and hot mustard, but most go right for the hot sauce. Has anyone else experienced this since being banded ?

initially I quit all spicy foods because I was afraid to eat it since I couldn't drink w/ my meals.

I go for anything spicy now!!!! I LOVE hotsauce/salsa on just about anything - even eggs w/ a little FF refried Beans -YUMM!

I'm just the opposite! I cannot handle anything spicier than a little sprinkling of black pepper, or extra mild salsa. Maybe a little horseradish, but horseradish hot doesn't linger and continue to burn in the mouth....when it's gone, it's gone.

Guess I'm just a wuss.

I am so glad you brought this up. LOL I mentioned this awhile back. I had mornings where I would get home from work and eat a tablespoon of hot sauce. I did that several mornings. I'll be sitting at work or driving in the car and all of a sudden get an INTENSE craving for hot sauce or fresh horseradish or peppers straight up. What used to be "hot enough" before the band doesn't even come close, now. I LOVE the burn, now. I have NO idea what that's about. Now that you're saying you've seen a lot of women in your support group with that problem, I may ask my NP when I go in for a fill the day after tomorrow.

In fact, here's the thread I started a month ago: http://www.lapbandtalk.com/f17/weird-cravings-47272/

I have always liked spicy, but I find now I like it even more. I think it's b/c a small amount makes me feel like I've REALLY eaten something. It just makes those taste buds work, I guess. I was just talking to my husband about this last night. He is trying to lose some weight now that we are at the same BMI, and he feels the same and is not banded. It's an interesting phenomenon.......like more bang for your buck with the spicy food!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
