Is this normal?

Recommended Posts

I am just wondering if the case of nerves I am having before surgery (it is tomorrow) is normal? One minute I am so excited to be getting banded and the next I am thinking "what am I doing?" I know I am doing the right thing for me, but there are moments when I could just about jump out of my skin with nerves.

So do any of you have any advice? I would really like to make it to surgery tomorrow with a little sanity left..:wink2: Thanks.

~Amy

This is so normal. I don't really have any advice because I was anxious right up until they put the needle in me. Of course was out like a light and woke up banded. Just remember that thousands of people have been banded and come through it without any problems and you will too. Good luck.

This is very normal. And, you will think that in the coming week I am sure. I was banded on the 15th. and asked my husband yesterday if I did the right thing. But, then I tell myself that I am not even a week out, and this summer when I can wear shorts in public I will know I did the right thing. The surgery is not bad. I never even took pain medicine. I went in at 7:30, woke up at 10:30, went home at 11:30, and took a 20 minute walk with my husband. Then slept on and off for the next 2 days. I never took pain meds. My biggest problem was hunger day 3 and 4, but now day 7 I think I am used to not eating. I hope I will eat again. It will be OK. Good luck to you. I have lost 9 or 10 pounds already. Will have official count on Wednesday at Drs. office. Don't be scared, but it's normal. Hang in there! Diane

Yes its normal. Don't panic. Who are you going to the hospital with? I went with myparents and my dad has a sense of humor and kept me cracking up. My Blood Pressure was high when they took it, and normally its not, but before I knew it, I was going into the OR.

My hubby is taking me. We have a 3+ hour drive:car: to get to the hospital because there are only a couple of surgeons that do lap-banding here. My mom will meet us there (she only lives 2 hours away from the hospital). I just heard from the nurse and they are moving up my surgery time so I have to be there 1 1/2 hours earlier than originally planned. I am hoping the weather cooperates (we are hoping for a high of 2 degrees today :wink2:).

Thanks everyone for the reassurance that what I am feeling is normal. One good thing about having this moved up is that I have less time to fret about it.

Hi Amy, I am tomorrow also. I am scared too. I am also excited. I have butterflies in my stomach. I keep worrying about thinkgs like what if something happens to me or can I go the rest of my life eating liguids and small ammounts, can I do it? I worry about not ever drinking beer again. Just the changes that are going to occur so quickly. I worry about the pain. It just a huge change for all of us. You know what I really worry about to...Taht they will ash how much I weigh infront of my family. I feel crazy today. I just want it over with.

Hey Amy,

It is totally normal!! I actually suprised myself and didn't wonder if I was doing the right thing before surgery! I was just so darn excited to have it done. It wasn't until I woke up that I wondered if I had done the right thing - now I know it was definitely the right thing to do.

If you weren't nervous and excited, I'd be worried. Good luck!

Jen

I was just banded on 01-17. I was crazy nervous, even had my will prepared and all my wishes written down and notarized, lol. I cried the entire way to the operating room and then before I knew it I was awake in recovery and banded. i went into surgery at 8am and was discharged by 11am- It's rough on the liquids, I won't lie. But we just gotta hang in there. You will do just fine!

My advice is for you to know that your feelings are 100% normal. Keep your eye on the prize....losing weight! You will be healthier, look better, feel better, live longer.

I was banded on 1/10 and was not the least bit nervous until the night before, when I started to panic! I started thinking, "What the h*** am I doing to my body?!" Then I thought to myself that if I didn't get the surgery, where would I be a year from now. Probably 20 pounds heavier. If I did get the surgery, in a year I will probably be close to my goal weight, and much healthier. That thought helped me get thought.

Good luck...the surgery really was a piece of cake!

Amy are you in Montana? Where may I ask? My sister and family are making, in our family's opinion, a bonehead move because her husband wants solitude, to Roundup, Montana. They are going to build a house. If you are near there, even though I know you from the board, maybe you can get to know my sister.

AmyMT, yes, yes, yes, you are very normal. I went to a seminar back in October 2007 and was excited about surgery. I then went from feeling excited to extremely nervous and anxious. That is something really unfamiliar to me. This kept up until the day before and then I just thought this is what I want -- relax. You will be fine. Take some deep breaths. I don't regret getting done last week. All the best to you.

Hi BensonRN, Good luck to you. If they ask for a weight in front of your family ask for a pen and write it down and hand it to them face down. They should then get the message that it is private.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
